I was diagnosed with RA about 20 years ago.  My older sister has some as of yet undifferentiated autoimmune disease.  She sees yet another rhuemy tomorrow to get more test results.

My younger sister saw her internist today, her RF is 62 (range at her lab is under 14 is normal).

I didn't want either of them to ever understand what I was going through.

Wow! That points to a strong genetic component, doesn't it? I'm so sorry you all have to go thru this. At least you have a lot of experience with RA. I know you will be able to help them.

My older sister saw her doctor today, she has an odd form of hoffman syndrome. Her thyroid works but her body can't properly use the thyroid hormone. Probable cause is autoimmune destruction of receptor cells.

yes i had always had Drs. ask if anyone in my family had RA and i said Don't know as come from weird family situations But i was doing some hunting for my possibly biological father when i found out he has a daughter and she has Bad RA, i didn't follow up as he is deceased no so no real point but it would apear if he was then the family history thing would be right ?

I never knew my mother's family until much later in life. Found out my aunt, my mother's sister, has RA. Also, one cousin has Lupus, one has MS. All autoimmune diseases. Must be some genetic connection.

My fathers side of the family has it but he had passed before my onset so I didn't know. My grandmother had it, one of my Aunts and an uncle who just disclosed the facts to me at a funeral. He says now- that his RA hits him in the sternum mimicking heart pain and lying in bed at night with this pain is one of his biggest complaints. He has not taken RA meds and refuses to. His fingers are crooked and he says his toes are as well.
