Hello, Spouse 2em,
You were asked the question, "does he drink coffee?" because doctors know that caffeine in any form, whether in coffee, tea, chocolate or
anything else that has caffeine in it makes the illness worse.
There is a major improvement in some bipolar patients who will stop
using anything containing caffeine. Alcohol also makes the illness worse and bipolar patients are asked not to use that, either.
Please go to a website called ruthwhalen.com/caffeine who has written about
the dangers of caffeine for people who are sensitive to it.
Doctors know that bipolar illness is caused by an inflammation of the
brain, but they do not know yet what causes it. They know that aspirin will help relieve some of the symptoms, but not to the exclusion of taking prescribed medications by psychiatrists. Some medical professionals have suggested that the brain is "toxic" in bipolar illness. (see ruth whalen again, please. )
Changing the diet to a more alkaline one than a diet heavy in meat
consumption and white flour products, as well as all milk products
will help with some of the problems. Please see alkaline foods.com and
acid-reacting foods.com for more information on which foods help
to constitute a more alkaline balance in digestion. A rule of thumb is
that more salads and green vegetables and reduction in beef, pork, and organ meats are called for, in general. Please remember that he should not stop eating meats, just reduce the number of times he has it per week, from, say twice or three times daily to perhaps 4 times per week.
Abilify and Lamictal are two of the newer mood stabilizers that seem to be helpful. I'd ask his psychiatrist (not a general practitioner or a psychologist) about
them. Your husband needs additional help; lithium is not really sufficient in all cases, and each case is different.
My prayers are with you; you are carrying a strong responsibility in your life right now.
