Guilt can both help and hurt you. Many people only let it hurt them. Let go of the mistakes you have made, let go of the pain, but try and learn from the lessons you have learned to not do it again.
What i practice is the simple idea of when i wake i work to be the absolutly best man i can be each and every day. Sure i sometimes fall short, but on the whole, i believe you get further setting the bar high and coming up occasionally short, then not trying at all.
