Narcotic Diversion

 Hi to all in the Chronic Pain Group. I have been nursing a bad back for years and I go to a wonderful pain clinic.  New Jersey has a serious problem with addicts who doctor shop. I currently know of someone who has 4 different doctors and they all prescribe Oxycodone 30mg for him. This person will drive to different parts of NJ and use different pharmacies. I did some research and found that NJ does not have any type of task force to oversee this illegal activity. This person does not suffer from pain at all and only sells his medicine to pay rent/utilities and snorts the rest. I wish I knew who the doctors were that are prescribing but, I don't. Law enforcement is overwhelmed with the pill dealing and seem to only be looking for BIG TIME DEALERS. I have suffered in the past because previous doctors were to afraid to prescribe so they grossly undermedicate their patients. I'm not sure if reporting this will even make a difference. Law enforcement appears jaded about this issue. Do I turn my head too?????

I cant say what you should do but I can tell you that I report it!

These folks and their Docs and that is a very loose term for those with a medical degree and an oath that says "first do no harm" are a very huge reason many many of the good Docs have been persecuted and hung out to dry not to mention the real victims,us the CPers that cant get adequate care and treatment.

I also hang on to my oath as a medical prof. and I first do no harm and ignoring these kinds of things are certainly harming to alot of the folks in the equation. These diverters are not picky about how old these clients of theirs are and they may be the guy that sells to your child or nephew or neighbors kids.

Ky might be a really backwoods place to live but they have this one in the bag with the KASPER system that tracks schedule meds you fill by your SSN making those reports on you available to police medical persons and pharmacies and if a Doc runs a KASPER he can see in a few seconds what and how many scripts you have filled in the last 30 days or 3 years.

Florida recently borrowed the software to this program and is implimenting it here in the hopes it will better able them to cut these fly by nite places out.

I dont understand why any state wouldnt do whatever they could to better control the amount of these kinds of meds being put out there on the street, Im thinking if you live in a state that doesnt have a system such as this maybe dropping a note your congressman will light a fire in one of them and put up for vote in your state.

The benefits of such systems will in the long run help those of us that play by the rules.

You can call the DEA hotline anon and tell them what you told us and whatever you know and they will instigate a investigation and they have ways of finding out where and who all they are seeing.

Good luck with whichever way you choice to go but if it is bothering you then you realize how wrong this action is.

Unfortunately this is something that will happen no matter what they do/or try to do about it. The addicts think they can throw the money to these Dr.'s and it doesn't hurt anyone....but it hurts us....they get caught in the end
