Hi everyone

We have 6 feet of snow here, We have been snowed in from last Monday until this afternoon. They finally got plows down our street this afternoon. Jerome was finally able to walk to the store and get some groceries. It's a Noco gas station with a convenience store, so a lot of things were sold out.

The temperatures are supposed to climb starting tomorrow into the low 40s, and 50s Sunday with scarred rain showers, and 60 Monday with rain. Could ya'll that pray, please pray for us that things don't get too bad.

I'm sorry I haven't been around. I've been going through a lot. Jerome got a part time job, and I'm scared that I'll lose my Medicaid and SSI. We got letters from Social Security saying we will have to pay back what they sent to us in August and September. A lady went to Social Security on our behalf, and now we're waiting to hear from them what is going to happen. There's no way we can pay the money back.

why would YOU lose your SSI for your husband's job? Your amount may come down as it is included as resources, yes, but I don't see part time being enough to lose benefit. Being on SSI, I can even work and make a certain amount without losing my medicaid and get a small check.
Hope things work out for you, and honestly I am SO GLAD i am not in a place with the snow!! Hope you all thaw out.

And look into that issue. It doesn't sound right. I don't think his put job should have an impact, but I don't know everything. Is that disability? Ssd?

I don't know for sure about my SSI. I haven't spoke to anyone from Social Security. Jerome already gets SSD and it sut me down to $98. I wish we could hurry up and hear something.

Now you know why I live in Florida after growing up and spending almost 55 years in the north and Northwest!!

Good luck with the SSI Loretta that systems not set up for someone trying to help themselves and their situation it is to keep folks under poverty levels and encourages people to do nothing by taking away more then they make. God forbidden you lose your medical.

momtofourangels, depending on what your hubby makes, you may still be eilgible for Medicaid, but you may have to pay a certain amount for the services. You will still be eligible for SSI based on medical so you will still be disabled. But, you won't be eligible on non medical which is income & resources. I hate to say this, but depending on your Medicaid is affected, it may not be worth it for him to work.

If SSA has determined you were overpaid in August & September, I am assuming that you won't aren't eligible on non medical for any SSI benefits. The reason I say that is because if you were still receiving anything in SSI, they would deduct a percentage of the overpayment from your monthly benefits until it was paid. Unless you could pay them back some other way. If he has to quit and you lose that income from him working and qualify for the $98 again, they will deduct from that each month. SSI is based on income and resources. With SSDI income & resources have no impact. Depending on the laws in your state, they can and will also deduct the overpayment from ya'lls IRS tax returns, even though you had no income, if you file a joint return. He can get his part of the tax refund, but your part will go to the IRS to pay SSA back.

"When couples file joint tax returns and the person who is not an SSA debtor wishes to receive his/her portion of the refund, advise the person to contact his/her local IRS office. (IRS can be reached by calling 1-800-829-1040.) This is known as an “injured spouse claim” which IRS alone can adjudicate. Advise that any refund must be made by IRS, not SSA."

i am on SSI. Just because I live with family, even though i pay rent, food, etc, It is counted as "income/resources" just because they are family. They deducted my check amount and expect me to live with $50 for food a month. You can't even get one weeks of food for that....

This summer after I moved out of my apartment(paying rent) and moving where I am now(paying rent), I stayed with my aunt for 3 weeks and I had to pay back SSI for than month bc they called it income-even though i payed for everything. it was basically like visiting family, or vacation or something, but I had to pay them back, making it really hard to pay bills the month they chose to deduct this.

I don't know how they expect any one person to live independently on a $700 check...but I sure do appreciate the insurance no matter how annoying all the rules and such are, and I guess in the grand scheme of things, since I've never really worked, I don't really "deserve" the small amount i do get. So I will try and not complain. Some have it a lot worse

AngMichelle, If you're paying your share of expenses and have receipts to prove it, your SSI should not be reduced. It doesn't matter if you live in the home of family members or a friend. To get the fair share of your expenses, add the rent, utilities and food for everyone in the household for a month, then divide that by the number of people that live there, children are 1 person. The amount you get is what is considered your share of the expenses for SSI purposes. If you can't prove that you pay your share, your check will be reduced by one third. Do you receive food stamps ? The income & resources of those you're staying with doesn't factor in to food stamps either.

You can request SSA to wave you having to repay the overpayment. But, with your husband working, they may not grant it.

In a perfect world M&G that may be but I can assure you the fs and in many states they're also your ssi go to person its not like that. It doesn't matter what you say or prove every dime of income being made by family you live with or lives with you is counted. Meaning when my 20 year old daughter stayed with me and she's SSI and I'm all SSDI her check went from the then Max benefits amount of $640 to $121 because they counted my $744,my child's $71, and my sporadic child support payment of $161 even though I had NOT gotten a dime in over 2 years against her. Child support theory with them is they count it even though your not getting it lowering your fs benefits now monthly and that saves you from losing benefits or paying back should they ever collect on your behalf. 6 years of a loss of $89 in fs for child support money I've not seen and likely never will!! It's the most idiotic system going. Talk to a worker? Lol not likely here we have a big new fancy fs office that no workers work out of on any day. Here all apps are online and all face to face appts are via phone interview. FS, Medicaid workers work from their homes somewhere in the state of Florida and the office is 15 computers a bank of direct call phone's on a wall, 2 computer specialists, a receptionist, 4 copy fax machines all paperworkis scanned iinto that you get NO proof of receipt of what you scanned,and one worker who may or may NOT see you if you have an issue, and 2 security guards to catch the frustrated applicants. It's the most daunting system I have ever worked with.

Your suppose to report changes within 10 business days but they don't effect benefits until your next recertification date and that means you may have been overpaid for months and they take it back in one month of benefits.

nvrthesame98, if someone is receiving SSI and they are over 18, the income of those they live with is not counted by Federal Law. Unless they are married and the other person they are living with they are married to. When someone receives SSI and lives in the home of another even if they are family, if they Do Not pay their share of expenses and have receipts, their SSI is reduced by one third. If the person they are living with gives them money for anything, that money is counted as income. If anyone is 18+ and is receiving SSI and living in the home, has no other income, unearned or earned and their SSI is reduced because of the income of those they live with, they need to appeal the decrease decision to an ALJ. Caseworkers aren't perfect, they do make mistakes.

As far as food stamps go, there are federal regulations as well as state regulations that govern that. You can also appeal decisions made in food stamp cases if you believe an error has been made.

As far as Support Enforcement goes, you have to be demanding. Call the worker every day, talk to their supervisor, etc. Leave messages and don't wait more than a few days in the beginning for them to return your call. Then take it to 1 day, then call right after they open & again about an hour & a half before they close, they 3 times a day. Let them know that your child is in desperate need of their child support money. Do everything you can to find out where the absent parent is working and living and give that info to the caseworker. If you're told a warrant is out for the absebt parents arrest, try and verify it. Call the Assistant District Attorney in charge of Support Enforcement in your county/parish. Explain the situation and ask if there is anything else you can be doing to try and get the child support money. Sometimes you will talk to someone, maybe a receptionist or secretary who can identify with your particular situation and they will go out of their way to help you.
