Beware of Clinical trial CBD scam emails! Do not open!

I've gotten several emails "informing" me I've been "selected" to be in a clinical trial of CBD (marijuana). I opened the email to see what in the world it was about, but you have to click on a link - which one should never do, and I didn't!

I looked on the scam and fraud prevention sites, and sure enough, it's another one of them.

I'm wondering how they got my email. I hope HW hasn't been hacked! I'm not in any other forums like this, just one local group, and I've asked them to check their security too. But our local hospital was hacked, so there are plenty of ways and places to become a potential victim.

Alcie, I've been getting them, too! I've also been getting 'notifications' about 'your order may have arrived' claiming to be from amazon! The thing is...I don't shop online!

I had filled out a sweepstakes ticket at a store, knowing full well I would get telemarketing calls about timeshare vacations by doing so. I think they sold their list and that's how my e-mail addy got out there.

I mark them all as spam.

Actually, if you read through the 7350 clarification, it differentiates between CBD from parts of the Marijuana plant that fall within the controlled substances act (CSA) and other sources:
" if a product, such as oil from cannabis seeds, consisted solely of parts of the cannabis plant excluded from the CSA definition of marijuana, such product would not be included in the new drug code (7350) or in the drug code for marijuana (7360), even if it contained trace amounts of cannabinoids."

Further, CBD can be sourced from industrial hemp. The 2014 farm bill allows for the cultivation of industrial hemp and products therefrom. Moreover, there are various court rulings affirming the status of industrial hemp, hemp stocks, hemp seeds, and their products (n/i resins) as not falling within the CSA... one such ruling is explicitly stated in the 7350 clarification (footnote 5).

This doesn't mean that the DEA won't act beyond the bounds of the law, but it is very unlikely that any prosecution of hemp stock/seed based CBD would withstand court challenge.

One way or another, check with your state and your PM. I'm in a state where MM is illegal but my PM is fine with CBD from companies that assay no THC.

Susie, I posted what I did because CBD is not all the same. But, many people believe it is.

It stands to reason if states have to pass laws for it to be legal. And the laws include how it can be sold and possessed. That there is a difference in that CBD and what is sold over the internet. If all CBD was legal federally there would be no need for states to pass laws making it legal. I don't want anyone to get into trouble. Or be taken advantage of by an internet site selling it.

The discussion of legality of various chemicals was interesting. I think it had a place here.

The point I was making though, is if you get an unsolicited email for products or trials it's likely to be a scam. It's just another trick to get your information and money, just like the Amazon, Walmart, and other rewards scams. Some information is sold by your bank, college, places you've done business, and some is stolen or just a wild guess, like the poster who doesn't shop online.

Don't open suspicious email. Don't "unsubscribe," which only lets them know they have good information. Use a good email program that weeds out well known scams. Gmail is fairly good.

Another point is to never buy drugs from out of the country. You may not get prosecuted, but it's illegal. You don't know what's really in whatever you get, if you get anything at all. A lot of us are pretty desperate. My husband needs Xifaxin, but we just can't afford it. No generic available. It's not covered by Medicare or any drug insurance. The out of country ads are really tempting.
