Question about MRI for uterine cancer

I have had chronic hip, thigh, leg & back pain. I had a MRI in March this year for uterine cancer stage 1. Would this have shown any irregularities in my spine or hip? I did have a dye injected in my arm. Thank you for any answers.

Hi Fortynine & welcome to the forum. I am guessing the MRI came back good for the possible cancer scare thank goodness. You would need an MRI of your back & hip to see if anything is going on in either area. When they do the scans they concentrate on the particular area they are scanning. Perhaps you can get your dr to refer you for one. I would have to consider doing an MRI of the back first. Often back issues can cause the issues you are speaking about.

I had the scan, there was cancer present & since had total vaginal hysterectomy. Following this, I began havin hip pain & sciatica. Thinking it was osteo arthritis which I know I gave in that hip, I just thought it was bothering me because if recouperatin from the op. But it got worse. My dr then wanted me to try cortisone injection, after waiting a while that person said they don’t inject into the hip. I then was sent for another MRI. RESULTS: 5 herniated discs the bottom S1 very bad - could be touching sciatic nerve & is thought to be severe. I have not done anything for this to happen so suddenly. Could something have happened during op? Could they tell from previous MRI that my spine was deformed. Thanks.

Oh my, I did not realize they found cancer. Do you have a copy of the written report of the lumbar spine? If not I suggest that you obtain a copy for your own record. No, your surgery did not cause the issue with your back, not possible. If you have bulging discs according to the MRI they were there all along, you were not aware of it. Millions of folks are walking around right now with bulging disc in their neck & back & have no idea they are there. Unless they start having pain or have some type of trauma & have an MRI or Ct Scan they will not know they are there. A person can lean over taking clothes out of a washer or dryer & move wrong & herniate a disc. A lady I knew herniated a disc in her back & ended up having back surgery from lifting a gallon of milk. She moved the wrong way somehow.

So now that your dr says you have this problem what is your treatment plan? Have you been seen by a specialist? Keep us posted.

Susie is right, herniated discs usually occur doing simple, seemingly harmless things. I severely herniated a disc squatting and ended up needing 3 surgeries. And my orthopedic surgeon apparently herniated a disc getting a loaf of bread off the shelf at the grocery store... Like Susie said, most of us have degenerative disc disease resulting in bulging and/or herniated discs (it is a normal age-related change), but they are not usually a problem/we don't realize we have them until they cause nerve root compression, resulting in pain +/- weakness or other neurologic deficit. Even then, the vast majority of people (something like 90%) will not require surgery, as most people will heal on their own within several months.

If the MRI for your cancer did show any abnormalities elsewhere, they would have been mentioned in the report (radiologists are very thorough and look for abnormalities in any and all tissues seen on the scan, even if it is not the primary area of interest). However, the scan would have been focused on your reproductive organs, and thus if anything, probably only part of your lower spine and hips can be seen. You would need a scan focused on your hip/back to really assess them.

Hope all is well with your cancer. My mom went through something very similar a few years back -- scary.
