My doc started me on topamax a couple weeks ago for pain and I couldn't take it due to a terrible allergic reaction. He is now giving me Tramadol ER but I have having horrible side effects as well. I feel tense, and having bad chest pains, and my hands are trembling.
Is there a good long-acting pain medication he might be able to prescribe instead of tramadol? He doesn't like prescribing schedule 2 meds but he may be willing to if there are no alternatives.
Thank you

Tramadol is horrible like that, a lot of people have posted they've had bad reactions (including me, I had to go off of it).
In my experience, just about
ANY med is better than Tramadol. However, most of them are Sch II. MsContin, Oxycontin, Opana ER - there are a ton, but they are all Sch II as far as I know.
Gabapentin/Lyrica seems to help a lot of people. It helps me a lot.

Topamax is preventative med taken daily. Topamax put me in the ER in 2005. After a 4 days I got an intense stabbing pain in my stomach, dropped like a stone in my son's room and apparently was not responsive. I remember the ambulance ride. Long story short I got pancreatitis which 3% could get this and I was one of them. Stopped taking it, never happened again.
Tramadol is non-narcotic pain med and taken when needed. Not understanding why he went Topamax (daily) to then Tramadol.
If you need something stronger for pain then he will need to prescribe low dose hydrocodone (Vicadin 5MG) or oxycodone (Percocet 5MG). I think the in between is Nucynta but if you got chest pains from Tramadol than Nucynta will be worse.

JPJR, I think the OP is talking bout the ER version, which I *believe* is not an as-needed med. I was okay with the "IR" tramadol, could stand it though it didn't help much, but the ER version made me totally haywire.

i told the dr. over the phone about
the chest pains and just said to stop it and didn't have any other ideas for me right now....ugh.
well i made an appointment this week. buprenorphine tablets helped me a ton in the past so maybe he'd be willing to prescribe me that. great long-term relief and it gave me energy as well. it was perfect at the time.

You should mention at your upcoming appointment everything that has been occurring and explain just how uncomfortable you are without any treatment for the pain. If it is affecting your daily life and routine make sure that you explain this and in what ways.
While many doctors claim they "don't like" to prescribe opiates/CII medications there are many legitimately indicated reasons for doing so and once they realize just how much your life is affected by your pain then, based on the mandate of all doctors, they should be putting your care and comfort ahead of any of their own reservations. All product monographs for controlled substances specifically state that any concern of misuse, etc. should not prevent the proper management of pain. Doctors have a mandate to care for their patients and the care and quality of life of their patients should be paramount to any other concern.
Sometimes doctors just need you do go through the process that they are more comfortable with, and fail it, for them to realize how severe the issue truly is and then they are willing to prescribe and be more compassionate.
If you continue to have trouble I do recommend presenting your story for a second opinion to a pain management doctor and discussing potential treatment options. Compassion and patient quality of life MUST be the priority for all doctors. Unfortunately for some this is no longer the case due to the media's shaming of doctors for the mistakes of those addicted to opiates which is completely unfair.
There are certainly many viable alternatives to the tramadol for you and most of them are opiate options and therefore CII.
Wishing you all the best and many pain-free days ahead.

it is defintely affecting my life terribly. I am only working one day a week in a very slow/low demanding environment and it is very tough for me. honestly, i just wish i didn't have to work because i feel it burns me out but it's not an option.

If you acct was locked you would not be able to post at all. Since you were able to post what you did above your acct has not been locked. I suggest rebooting & log in again.

Tramadol makes me crazy, I get hyper, anxious, can't eat or sleep. Finally I started to get a rash around my mouth. But was good on the pain.
Now I take Norco three times a day and can take half if my pain is down. Or two if it is up. Less is better because you develop a tolerance for the meds and then they don't work as well anymore.
