Right hip pain

Good Morning, So over the last 2 years I have been dealing with debilitating pain in my lower back and right hip. I was always focused on the lower back as that is what has been bothering me for over 2 decades now. I had a right hip injection yesterday afternoon as part of some diagnostic attempts to locate my pain. Today I feel 80% relief and couldn't be happier. While I do realize that the medicine they injected my hip with will wear off, at least we are on the right track it seems. Next step is to figure out what is wrong with my right hip and see if that can be fixed. Just an update as to how I'm doing and possibly an avenue for some people who deal with lower back pain that is a mystery. Hips, I guess, can cause all sorts of problems in the lower back that hide what is really wrong. Now I do have issues with my lower back to be sure, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and some early onset arthritis, but the worst of what I have been dealing with for 2 years now seems to be stemming from my right hip. My hip pain is a deep aching in the outside of my right hip that reveals itself with hip rotation against resistance, sharp to dull ache in my right groin after walking, standing, or sitting for too long, and a sharp pain above my right buttock while leaning forward at the waist. I've had hip issues since my 20's, starting with being 'double jointed' in my younger years. I've had 'internal' hip pain diagnosed as bursitis diagnosed through x-ray and MRI. Quite recently, I've had pain on the 'outside' of the hip, just below the bony prominence...also diagnosed (so far) as bursitis. This restricted internal and external rotation, abduction and adduction, weight bearing, and flexing. I also have lower back issues, including herniated discs at L-4/L-5 and L-5/S1 diagnosed through MRI imaging.

Being hyper-flexible, I think perhaps I have Sacro-iliac joint dysfunction that they have not been able to officially diagnose because the exam does not produce the expected result...reproduction of pain...simply because they cannot push me to the point where it creates the pain! All I do know is that the yoga position 'childs pose' is the only relief I get and it is one of the recommended positions for SIJ relief. Sadly, I haven't been able to rest in this position because of the hip issue!

Shoes play a big part in my comfort. If I wear flip flops for 2 or more days I am sure to have hip pain/back pain issues. If I wear loafers, the same thing. I've found Rebok sneakers to be the best footwear for me. I have a black pair and a white pair. I can also wear my work boots without much trouble.

I hope your doctor can figure out what the root of your problem is. I had to be put on prednisone to reduce the inflammation from my latest difficulties and still have to follow up with an orthopedist.

Pitmom, I assume your name is a result from living in Pittsburgh or having a child attending Pitt? I live in the Pittsburgh area myself. Anyway, I appreciate your response. I hope that after my follow up appointment to discuss the success of the injection we can have a plan moving forward as to what can be done next. Thanks.
