Neck injury after C2 - C7 anterior fusion, Massage and/or Acupuncture?

Hello,
What sort of success can I expect if I look to PT massage or Acupuncture to relieve my neck pain after a recent injury, 6 years after a cervical fusion? Has anyone had success and should I worry about acupuncture hitting the fusion hardware?

I am a 73 year old male, I have read many of the tales of pain and those things we must do to try and strengthen our bodys or attempt eliminating various levels of pain. My story is similar to many BUT may be just a bit different. In brief, I had a C2 ~ C7 fusion [anterior] in May 2014 and have lived with low level pain ever since. I use topical OTC creams, patches and ointments to help me get thru my day to day life. I have found many oils and patches made in Asia to be more helpful than those made in the US as well as marijuana creams.
A couple of weeks ago I had an accident that caused a severe blow to one side of my neck and I WAS VERY AFRAID that my fusion may have been damaged. We rushed to the ER, explained what had happened and Xrays were done. Whew,, to my relief the fusion remains intact, ZERO damage BUT the muscles of my neck were seriously traumatized and I suffer from quite severe pain. On a scale of 0 to 10 I will say 8 is the level of pain. My family physician has prescribed a muscle relaxer and ice/heat but they aren't having much impact to my pain. My family physician is not one who easily prescribes Rx pain meds,she does not want me using them.

Since I'm completely unfamiliar with acupuncture I had no idea the depth those little needles penetrate so it's good to learn they don't go far and the hardware in my neck shouldn't be an issue. I'm still reading reviews of the many massage therapists and acupuncture practitioners in my area, all with a 'grain of salt' type attitude knowing few who are happy will write a review but those who were unhappy will write them. I'm going to go with acupuncture first and give it a chance before having anyone mess with my neck in an aggressive massage. Before I do that I'll be checking with the neurosurgeon who did the fusion for her advice. Thanks again straydog, As have most others, I will keep the forum posted as my case progresses.
