Hi JohnZ & welcome to Healing Well. Sorry to read about your accident. about acupuncture, in the late 80's, I was rear-ended while at a complete stop. I had a whiplash type injury. After nearly 3 months of pain meds, muscle relaxers & PT, I was no better off, if anything worse. My sister convinced me to go see her dr that had went to China to be trained. He was very straight forward, he said if you do not feel any difference after 3 treatments, it's not working. I did a total of 9 treatments & wished I had seen him from the start, lol. The needles do not go in deep, your hardware should be fine, just inform them of your surgery. It was painless, the most pain was being wiped down with alcohol afterwards. Look for a practitioner that is trained in the Chinese method only, there are many out there. Some places offer this & they use a little handheld device & that method is worthless.
If you decide to go the massage route do your homework on finding an excellent masseuse, not a walkin place. Because they offer massages doesn't mean they know about clients that has had surgery.I used a lady years ago that retired. Her clients convinced her to work out of her home. She only took a a selective few. The difference with her was she was also trained in reflexology with years of experience under her belt.
I hope this gives you a little help.
