Mirena - Questions for the women

I have been seeing a gynecologist for abnormal vaginal bleeding, and she has recommended either Mirena (IUD + progesterone) or ablation. What experiences have women here had with either, and the effect or not on their Crohn's? I have to do something because of the iron problems I am having. I have rectal bleeding too.

I would really appreciate hearing about people's experiences if they are willing to share. Thanks.

I just got one in Januray of this year. I had my last period then too. It is great!! I have not seen any Crohns related problems from the mirena.

I had a copper IUD for 10 years and opted for the 5 year mirena. The no-periods really helped my CD because I sometimes flared during that time of the month :)

Any questions you have let me know. I am happy I decided to get mirena.

I have the mirena as well. I've had it in for a year this second time and 6 months on my first time. I haven't had a period in a year. I love it and haven't noticed any problems with it and my CD. I've only had one pregnancy scare with it but we've more or less ruled that out.

Hi WriterMum. A friend of mine in similar circumstances opted for the ablation because she was perimenopausal and didn't have any future pregnancy planned. Lots of others have loved the Mirena, as you can see above.

I too have the Mirena, I had it placed about 3 -4 years ago. Absolutely no problems. I got it because of my low iron and after 3 kids my periods were really heavy. I say "do it". I still have spotting every month, but nothing compared to how they were.

I have a Mirena too. Mostly it has been okay - just got it about 6 months ago. I still get spotting occasionally but mostly I hardly bleed at all. I also have fibroids so I think mine is taking a little longer to settle in. Way less cramping, and probably 85% less bleeding. For the first time in 10 years my hemoglobin is normal. For the first time ever I don't take any ibuprofen (my cramps used to be so bad I had to). I have had some odd leg pain down one side occasionally since the insertion, but I think this might be related to the fibroid/IUD positioning. I recommend it - it really helped my iron levels!
