I was diagnosed 10/10/08. Every year on October 10th I do something special to celebrate my "crohnsiversary".
I was diagnosed after an emergency resection. The resection put me into remission, which lasted about 6 months. I was so lucky because after recovering from surgery I finally felt well enough to start making some really positive, healthy changes in my life. I started carefully watching what I ate, and I started an exercising regularlly. One year after my daignosis I celebrated by going hiking in Acadia National Park. The next year I took up running, and I celebrated my second crohnsiversary by running at 10K race. Then this past year, on my third crohnsiversary, I hiked Champlain Mountina in Acadia, using the Precipice Trail which is part hiking trail and part climbing adventure.
Even though I am no longer in remission, I've been lucky enough that my symptoms are not debilitating. I feel so blessed that I am able to do these things, so I celebrate my crohnsiversary every year to remind myself that I am in a much better place now than I was on October 10, 2008. I hope to have healthy and happy crohnsiversaries for many years to come, but even if I get very sick again I'll at least have the memories of the adventures I had the chance to take, and did take, thanks to being diagnosed.
