C Difficile & Vanco Taper Problems, Anyone Else??

Hi I was wondering if anybody started to feel sick again while they were tapering off of Vanco. I was in the hospital for 4 days got out took my vanco 3 days into my taper I felt sick got the D back. nausea etc. I was put back on full strength vanco for 2 more weeks. I'm 2 weeks into my taper again and nausea loose stool in dehydration came back. Dr. said it cannot be C diff because I'm still on the vanco. Has anyone else felt that while tapering they relapsed and got sick again thank you for your help.

My husband did test positive for cdiff whole on vancomycin, but he was also on about 80mgs of solumedrol which meant he really didn't have much of an immune system to speak of. If you aren't on high dose steroids, the possibility of cdiff on vancomycin is very very low.

However, you could be experiencing post infectious IBS. Cdiff is such a tough infection, that it may take some time for your digestive system to get back to normal. For my husband that was about 3 months. We started off with very easy to digest soft white foods, and slowly added things back to his diet. We had some occasional setbacks, but he did slowly return to normal.

Try keeping a food journal and being very conservative with what you eat and see it helps keep IBS symptoms at bay and maybe identify triggers.

Thanks PV for the info. My immune system is not great within the last eight months I had shoulder surgery, kidney stonen, gallbladder removed, shingles, now C Diff. So there is a lot going on. The last couple of days I have just felt bad with D and the sorry to be gross but the smell of my bowel movements have had the cdiff smell. I just turned in a stool sample so I hope to get some answers. I felt good but then got real sick again and had to go to the ER for dehydration and very weak.

It is definitely possible! I had a couple of relapses between now and August. Just after Christmas, I finished a total of 9 weeks of vanco and flagyl... I've still got stuff going on, obviously with some sort of IBD issues, but I THINK the c-diff is gone.

It's a really difficult infection to get rid of - the spores for these shell-like 'structures' around themselves in the environment, or even in the gut, and can live for a good amount of time... that's why a lot of people will start feeling better, end the antibiotics and then just a few days later, end up sick with the c-diff all over again.

My guess is, if you have the smell (you've smelled it before so you know what it's like) and you are having a lot of diarrhea still, you probably have the c-diff. then again, it's possible that your GI tract is just having trouble getting back to normal and is a little aggrivated.

I'm looking at having to do more tests because they think my c-diff might be back as well... :/ If it is back, I don't know what I'm going to do! Vanco is super expensive and, being in college, I am broke!

Wow Jade sorry to here you are dealing with this too. Thanks for your info and story. I know this is grooss but there is a procedure they can do its a feces transplant that has a 95% effective rate. It's just finding a DR to do it. My DR said he would but of course he wants me to keep on vanco for a long time before he does that. I've read some people were on vanco for 6 months and like you said its very expensive. Well I hope all turns out well for you (us) thought and prayers go out to anyone who has to deal with C Diff. I have missed so much work I could lose my job and my insurance. I have already missed a lot of time with my wife and 8 year old daughter.

If you have the opportunity... you should definitely try it!
I lost my medicaid... so, I can't get any treatment for whatever is going on inside of me at all. So, I say you should do it for the both of us! ;) I understand the frustration with missing stuff - like I said, I'm in college - I've missed a good deal of classes and such and am afraid that, if this keeps going on, I might have to take a semester off. But, we'll see.
