Hello
I was recently diagnosed with CD & put on Pentasa. 4 500mg pills twice a day. I have been having some side affects that are likely common; headaches & nausea but I have also been having problems with pains in my pelvis, that I never experienced before. It is always in the evenings so I think maybe I've been on the go/ on my feet too much today but the pain is radiating into my right hip & down my leg! The only thing I can take is Tylenol & use a heating pad.

Have any of you had similar reactions/side affects?

I did have what I thought were sciatic pains before I was diagnosed but I'm wondering if this is the same... I am booked into see a specialist but that could take months! Basically I was told after a Colonoscopy & CT was yep you have Crohn's & put on meds... Hope to find out more on my condition once I get into the specialist

Welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry you are not feeling great. The pain on your right side seems consistent with inflammation in the TI, the most common place for Crohn's activity. It is likely that the Pentasa is not completely effective - the mesalamines are a nice safe med but there isn't a lot of strong data that they actually do anything for Crohn's. It might be possible for you to combine Pentasa with entocort, a steroid that is active in the TI only - with entocort to get you into a solid remission, the Pentasa then may be able to support a remission.

The DR that prescribed the Pentasa should be able to prescribe entocort. Entocort should not be taken for longer than 6 months - you should be able to get into a good remission in less time than that.

Thank you for your response Kazbern. As mentioned I am newly diagnosed & not be able to see the specialist yet so a lot has no been explained to me. What is TI?
Can my family DR prescribe any of these drugs you mentioned? As I am not certain how long the wait could be to see the specialist..

If the pain continues I would be sure they check for an abscess. I had pain that I was told was just CD pain and I needed to deal with it, after almost being addicted to pain pills I learned I had a fistula and it had abscessed. I was to the point I almost could not walk - pain in my right hip (socket joint area) down into my leg. I had an MRI and it did not show up. It did show up on a CT scan. Good luck!

Thank you for your post! The pain seems to only happen about once a week..is it possible with a fistula that the pain can come & go?! I did have a CT scan & nothing was mentioned but maybe they weren't looking for one.. I finally got my appointment with the specialist on October 22 so hope to have some answers soon!

My pain was constant.  Maybe that's good that it goes and comes - I don't know.  Good luck on the 22nd!  Hopefully you will get some answers.

I have sciatic pain from a spinal chord injury and it sounds more like that. That being said, there is a connection to my Crohn's because I have enteropathic arthritis and the worse the inflammation in my spine, the worse the sciatic pain. I also have mild scoliosis which doesn't help things either. And the sciatica does come and go like you described.

If you have joint pain or swelling or have already been diagnosed with Crohn's related arthritis, it could be that it's causing the sciatica or making it worse.
