Pentasa and Imuran combo

Saw my GI yesterday. He had no explanation for the syncope I had lately. He said it was coz of malnutrition and expects it to be repeated. He also ordered a sodium and potassium test to rule out that I don't have electrolytes imbalance. The inflammation markers came out normal except for the ESR which was 28 in the first hour and 58 in the second hour but my GI didn't bother about it. Also, the CBC results were normal so I was asked to taper Entocort to 3mg but I went down to 4.5 mg only. He said we have to wait and see how I would function w/o steroids once Entocort is withdrawn.
So, I'm left w the Pentasa Imuran combo. My question is: Why is Pentasa added to Imuran? I can't feel that Pentasa is of any use. Still I don't want to stop it as I have experience w stopping it for 2 weeks coz of stomach pain and then having severe urgency. How effective is Pentasa when added to Imuran?

Don't usually post here anymore but I do look in from time to time :)
I don't know why it is added but-my son was on Pentasa and symptoms didn't improve so they added in Azathioprine with a huge improvement and he stabilised. Twice his consultant said to bring him off the Pentasa as the Azathioprine was doing the job. We tried twice and failed miserably both times with him relapsing. In his case, neither drug by itself put him into remission but as a combination they got/keep him there:) His medical records now note that he needs both drugs!

Vixen, thank you very much. Hope he is better now. Well, yes, this is what I know that they both have to be combined together but I don't know the reason. It seems that the two meds do improve our condition. Who knows!
