Hey all! Anyone who has crohns and tattoos- have you ever had issues with getting ink done due to constant inflammation? I have gotten a lip ring and industrial done and the lip became infected and the ear never healed on the outside it formed keyloyds. Due to this I've been holding out getting a tattoo.

I've got a number of tattoos. Some while on biologics. One seemed to take a bit longer to heal, but it wasn't infected. I've not had one while I've been in a bad flare.

I personally don't like tattoos, but that's certainly besides the point. I really don't think it's worth the health risk, esp. for anyone that has underlying health issues.
Also, tattoo parlors just don't seem like the most hygienically sound places in the world. Definitely not worth the risk in my book.

My GI told me absolutely not when I asked about getting a tattoo. I am taking Humira for my Crohns and I also have PSC. He asked me if the risk of infection was worth getting one. It's not to me.

I have had two since being dx'd. With the most recent one (now five years old), the ink will sometimes "rise up" (i.e., the tattoo has texture), and I'll get bumps on the tattoo that itch a lot. It usually doesn't last long (a couple hours to a day), and I've found this happens to a lot of people, which makes me think it's not necessarily inflammation related.
I heal slowly from even the smallest cut, so the biggest challenge is keeping it free of infection during a drawn-out healing process.
