Rose, unfortunately, no. I suffered with ulcerative proctitis for twelve years. I tried 6MP (seven years and did nothing for me), Remicade and Humira. My condition steadily worsened, I became prednisone dependent and it was killing me...literally, killing me. I had a total colectomy with end ileostomy in June of 2010. However, my surgeon left the anus! His reasoning being there are more complications when they remove the anus, but, my disease WAS in the rectum, so, that bit of anus in there (only 2cm) is now diseased. My surgeon retired in 2013 and the anus became ulcerated in 2014. I am now seeing another colorectal surgeon. He has performed two biopsies in the last two years. I have no dysplasia or cancer but he just wants to keep an eye on things. He prescribed cort suppositories, but they irritate more than anything. I was on Cipro for a few weeks last month for an unrelated infection and I think that helped clear up the anus. Keeping my fingers crossed for now. Also, my new surgeon does not recommend surgery to close the anus. He said it would be too much for me to go through. I will be 70 in August, but a healthy 70. Surgery isn't for everyone, but it sure improved my quality of life 100 fold.
