Coughing up mucus and chest pain

It seems that being in the middle of a flare up is not enough for me. Three days ago, I started to have a sore throat, chest pain and coughing up mucus. Took a cough syrup that I know is safe for my stomach. However, this medicine caused me diarrhea and triggered my abdominal pain. Last time I got a bad cold, my GI put me on an antibiotic that is only prescribed for pneumonia.

My recent unpleasant experience w antibiotics that threw me into my current flare up made me dread the idea of taking antibiotics. But coughing hurts my TI and I feel pain immediately. Any suggestions of how to deal with this chest infection? I think it's an infection as the mucus is greenish (sorry for the graphic), I can't breathe normally and there is a sort of wheezing and I think it might be caused by Remicade.

It am so sorry you are going thru all of this...wasn't your last infusion done recently?

I wouldn't chance a chest cold. I too caught one, in January, and I didn't get over it until the middle of March. I had to take two or three courses of antibiotics and have multiple x-rays done because I am on Remicade.... My GI called me and told me to get my butt into the imaging department and to my pcp.

Hi Clo,

Sending hugs back to you. I'm trying to cope and returned back to the OTC syrup but this time I'm taking it 2 times only instead of 3 to lessen any possible side effects. At the time being, I can't venture taking any antibiotics.

If its green then thats a bad sign that there is an infection. Waiting will most likely make it worse and you will have to be on even more antibiotics. I've dealt with this a lot with my mother who had gotten tons of lung infections over the years. I know the antibiotics are terrible for the crohns but an infection when you are getting such a large amount of remicade is not a good idea.

Lab, thank you so much. I'll wait till Monday and see how things go on. If it gets worse, I will definitely call my GI.

The most potent natural remedy for situation you described is product Argentyn 23. I hope it wouldn't be a problem If I say. This is high grade colloidal silver and natural antibiotic that helped me multiple times. For immediate relief you can gargle sea or Himalayan salt for three minutes or even more. You can use solution 1/4 cup warm water to 1/2 teaspoon salt. mix well and gargle in 2-3 courses, 3 times/day. After this don't drink and let salt sit in your throat for at least 30 min. Hope this can help.

Thank you, owleyes. Unfortunately, I don't have this product. Would gargling the mix you mentioned relieve chest pain? I'm not going to swallow it, right?

That's right, don't swallow. Gargle with head set back so it can reach deeper spots.
Take small amount and gargle as long as you can, they spit and do it again and again until you finish whole thing. This is great for a soar throat but probably wan't make chest pain to go.

For chest-pain you can try breathing eucalyptus, peppermint or frankincense essential oils. Put filtered water in small cooking pot to boil - about 1 L=4cups. After boiling move the pot and add about 3 drops of one or more essential oils. Those three are specific and great for breathing issues/pain. Leave near you and breathe as deep as you can. Be careful since air will be hot. Do this two or three times/day.

Try this and see how you feel. This helped me when I am sick. I was in very bad flare with terrible chest pain and essential oils helped. I know that is too much of things that we can do, but if you can go to sauna it would be even better. Every spa center today have it.

At the end I like to use what I have at home. Salt and some great essential oils are not hard to find. Hope this can help.

Owleyes is right...

The eucalyptus oil is wonderful. I use it to help clear my sinuses during allergy season. I don't think it helps with chest congestion or coughing but am unsure. (I was more worried about just being able to breathe so I didn't pay attention to that.) I used to rub just a little in my palm and then cup my nose and mouth to help clear my sinuses.

If I was at home I did what Owleyes recommended plus I placed a towel over the pot and my head to make a tent and would breath deeply until I felt better. After I was done I would either set the pot close by or leave the pot on low so a small amount would be released in the air.

However mucus with a green tint can indicate an infection....and it is worrisome especially since you are on Remicade and an immunsuppresent. I hope that you were able to contact you doctor today.?

The idea of eucalyptus sounds great for my sinusitis. I'll give it a try.

Coughing has become unbearable especially at night; I can hardly sleep. My GI finally replied. He recommended I take a round of moxifloxacin. Hopefully, the 5 day course goes on smoothly and I don't get excessive diarrhea. Last time I was on Abx, I insisted to continue the course though I got excessive d which ended up with the current flare up.
