Confirmed C Diff after being on antibiotic

Well I feel like my life is over...Tues I was confirmed positive for C Diff and am currently going through a Crohn's flare. I am absolutely devasted with the C Diff news as I was to start Humira Friday.

I am currently hospitalized for the C Diff and don't know when I'll be discharged. My hospital GI Dr said I can't start Humira until I'm clear of the C Diff. They are currently treating my C Diff with vancomycin and steroids for my Crohn's.

But I called my regular GI Dr and he said I can begin my Humira Monday if I happened to get discharged from the hospital. The hospital says my vancomycin is for 14 days...right now I am on day 3.

Why am I getting 2 conflicting answers...I am so confused and don't know what to do. I want my C Diff cleared but don't want my Crohn's disease affected. At the same time I don't want any of this to slow the process in ridding of my C Diff as that is my main priority right now.

I would hold off on starting Humira until the C Diff is completely cleared and you are off of antibiotics. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections and given that you have to do loading doses, 4 pens, you may end up affecting your body's ability to fight off the infection. Just my 2 cents based on what I have read related to infections and Humira. Hope you feel better soon.

Hmmm, that's strange, I stayed on my Remicade the whole time, and I've had c. diff. 8 times. I never once delayed a Remicade infusion from c. diff.

My son had back to back to back bouts of C - Diff (HORRIBLE) and still had two remicade treatments AND illeocecal surgery with no issues. Anyone who entered his hospital room had to gown up for prevention but otherwise there seemed to be no other impact. And along with his Crohn's disease he has a heart defect which means before surgery he had to be flooded with powerful antibiotics so he did not get endocarditis so he had surgery for Crohn's while on vancomycin to treat very stubborn c - diff while being flooded with antibiotics for a potential heart infection. Somehow the medical team balanced it all! Best to you!

Betty Sue I am sooo sorry to hear about your son...I hope he is doing better!

Dr came by Friday right before I was discharged and clarified no Humira til C Diff clears....but he will keep me on prednisone til then. I guess he'll taper me off the prednisone as long as everything goes well.
