GI is apparently a psychiatrist now. Which antidepressant meds have help you?

I just came from the GI doctor today. I have been suffering from nausea since last week. I am at a point where I do not want to go to work. I teach, I cant imagine being in front of my students given my current situation. I am fatigued and nauseous all the time.
I am need to vent.. He performed a endoscopy and found nothing. Because I mentioned I took clonazepam in the past and do not want to take viberzi.My Gi now states he believes I am clinically depressed.
These are the steps that I am taking....
therapy
acupuncture on Sat
going to see a psychiatrist tomorrow. My fellow Crohnies what antidepress have helped you? I am at my wits end. I am currently taking Pentasa. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am tired and I miss being active with my own family.

Hello & welcome to the forum. Sorry to read about what you are dealing with. To be honest, any kind of chronic illness just sucks & it is common for a person to become depressed. I have been on Effexxor & Zoloft several times over the years & have done well with both. But, you must understand we all react differently to the meds so it is a matter of finding what works with you the best. And there are many different ones to try. It is trial & error at first. It usually takes a few weeks for the medication to kick in to see if its going to help. If you by chance have any side effects, just remember they are temporary.

Hopefully what ever your dr decides on with be the one you need.

Where is your Crohn's disease located? How long have you had it? And how severe is it?

And why does your doctor have you taking Pentasa, a medication only approved for Ulcerative Colitis? It's not an effective treatment for Crohn's disease.

Your nausea could be from lots of things, including stress, but it could also be a sign of Crohn's - and Crohn's that is undertreated.

This is a real problem for a lot of people. They don't get treated for their very real bowel problems and GI's who don't know anything just attribute their misery to psychological problems.

Wellbutrin has been prescribed for decades for people with IBD's. Many have found antidepressants do in fact help out. Illness can stress a person to the max especially if they are having a tough go of things. Add trying to work, raise a family & take care of things it can become overwhelming for many. I would rather take an antidepressant that helps rather than sit & stew in my own pot. This is true with any type of chronic illness.

Some have said Welbutrin has helped with their IBD as well as their depression/anxiety. I recently started generic cymbalta after a period of bizarre neurological symptoms. There have been ups and downs with it for me. I cut back to a low dose due to increased anxiety and restless legs and think I've found my sweet spot with it. The first 6 weeks were a bit hellish as well but I desperately wanted to feel better.

I will say that I hate being on any medication, especially with an autoimmune condition that is confusing enough without adding medication side effects into the mix.

1000% agree with justwantofeelnormal. Leave the mental health issue to a specialist and get an evaluation. I had a gastro several years ago think maybe I was just stressed and depressed ( I was very stressed due to family situations but definitely not depressed). I went along with taking Lexapro to see if it would work and it dulled everything. That includes the symptoms of the crohns flare I was in that was being completely ignored and that eventually sent me to the hospital a few months later where they stopped the Lexapro but I was in rough shape from the disease being uncontrolled. Plus I need up with all of the lovely side effects of the withdrawal. Have you considered getting a second opinion?
