I am so frustrated with accidents at night while sleeping. Sometimes just a small shart, others like last night a bm and I didn’t wake up until afterward. I am now taking welchol many times all day to help (8 pills a day) but now my cholesterol is dangerously low and causing other problems. Welchol and other meds like it are technically old line cholesterol medications, but are used now to bind bile acid for those who have had numerous bowel surgeries.

but between no sleep and changing sheets and even showers during middle of the night, I am exhausted. A friend suggested adult diapers to at least help so the accident doesn’t cause sheets to be changed.

Has anyone had to use adults diapers? If so, anything to add that would help I’d greatly appreciated.

When I had a stoma bag after emergency resection I woke up one morning to find it had leaked so I feel your pain... the only way I could get decent nights sleep after that was a couple of thick towels on the bed to sleep on. It only happened once but it was then the worry as much as anything

I have not used adult diapers, but have used incontinence pads to put on the bed if I know I am struggling and may have an issue. Has saved me more times than not. Yes, mess in underwear but at least the sheets didn't have to be changed.

M, I have used the depends a lot. I went through nearly 3 years of uncontrollable diarrhea. Was sent to a dr that wrote the first book on diarrhea & not even he could come up with an explanation. To this day, I keep them on hand. If it's a lot of watery stuff, there can be some leakage, so I would put a couple of disposable pads on the bed. When I was at my worst with this, most of my clothes & underwear got thrown in the trash, it was impossible to get stains out.

I say buy some & try them out. Wearing them was cheaper than constantly throwing my things out.

Hi before my first surgery I was on diapers all the time. I recommend them. It saved me from changing sheets all the time. I still had to get up 4-5 times at night to wash and change diapers but after that I could just fall back into the bed and keep sleeping.

Oh I needed them during the day too. Couldn't control the accidents anymore. Hence the surgery.

Thanks to all. I am trying out a few different ones to see which one i like best. Thankfully, they have saved me once in the past week. So i think this is the way to go for now until i can get it under control. I just don’t understand why this happens at night. A discussion to have with my GI at next appointment. Mirow

If you are a female I would suggest buying Depends Silhouette Active fit briefs. They fit just like ladies underwear and I can even put my panties over them. They come in moderate, maximum or overnight. I buy the moderate. They have made me save face on many occasions! I usually wear them shopping or traveling. But I know some that sleep in them It's worth a try for your peace of mind!

If I read this thread correctly, most of fecal incontinence happens as a direct result of bowel surgery. If you never had bowel surgery, you are less likely to develop accidental leakage. This is a serious side effect for people considering surgery?

I am a 57 yr old male and have had two resection surgeries, so I have lost about 3 feet of small intestines and of course the valve at the TI. My GI said some of this is from the surgeries and some is from my flares being more intense than previous ones. Right now I have not had an accident in two weeks, so that is good. I ordered some samples from another company to see how they fit. I have gotten over the initial shock of having to wear them as they do give me some confidence at night. Thanks

Having an accidental at night when you are alone or with your loved one is not a big deal. But having a 4-hour meeting with 40 of your co-workers in a relatively small room where people sit tight next to one another would be quite different.

Mirow: can you work from home or are you like semi-retired? Just curious, you don't have to answer if you don't feel like to.

I don’t mind at all. This site has been a wonder support to be so I am fine with sharing. I am on company paid long term disability at the moment. I am Working on social security disability as I am required to file as part of our company policy. I have been working from home for the past 4 yrs, until I had major gi bleed in March 2018. I lost 8 pints of blood and almost didn’t make it. I have been out of work since then. I have major anxieties and moderate depression and see a therapist as well as take medication for both. I also have a visual motor processing speed impairment that was caused by my various surgeries( 2 resection, open heart and a craniotomy to remove a brain tumor which then gave me a 24 min grand mal seizure) and then the Massive blood loss. This was not take into consideration for the disability as I wasn’t tested until 6 months after the blood loss but will obviously be part of anything going forward.i went back to work after every surgery but all 4 of my drs said it was time to stop of I would die at my desk. The issue with accidents is lack of sleep. The visual motor processing speed impairment means I get lost is rapid fire discussions or discussions with a lot of power points presentations. When I get tire, I struggle with getting words out and or fully understanding things. Not good for doing all your work on the computer and phone

This site has also provided me with valuable info. It looks like you have gone through a lot. This disease can be harder for men, as the "stereotypical" men are supposed to be self-reliant. I hope you will get social security disability quickly. How long have you had Crohn's? I mean when were you diagnosed of Crohn's. From what I read, someone diagnosed at an early age tend have to the more aggressive form of the disease.

As someone who has had multiple bowel resections, I know exactly what you mean about changing the sheets, showering, cleaning in the middle of the night, its exhausting, embarrassing (and I'm by myself) and stressful. I take 2 50mg pills of codeine and 1 packet of Questran (bile acid binder) daily and find with these 2 things that no longer happens. It has changed my bowel movements from mostly liquid to almost normal and no longer have surprises at night.

No. I had accidents because of of a ulcerative colitis flare. I had no surgery then.
