I've had five or six upper endoscopies. All were done with fentanyl and versed.
One of them, I remember gagging and struggling for a second or two before hearing the doctor say something about giving me more versed; then the next thing I knew, I was waking up, and it was finished.
For all the others, I remember nothing. They went very smoothly.
They're usually very quick procedures, just a few minutes.
And if I remember right, they give you a numbing spray in your throat that is supposed to help with the gag reflex.
Full anesthesia is overkill for this procedure for most people.
