Anytime the use of the word "cure" appears in a post, it's sure to wrangle a lot of people. While the title mentions "cure", the article states that the treatment resulted in "remission". Also, antibiotic therapy and FMT aren't really new. I would really have to see some study data and credible evidence before considering this even remotely a cure.

I can sadly confirm it’s media hype unfortunately. I’ve had both the antibiotic treatment and FMT and am not cured. My definition of a cure is that this dreaded disease is no longer present in everyone who has this treatment, which is not the case. I should update my name also, as I was finally diagnosed over a year ago with Crohn’s after many years of an indeterminate diagnosis.

Yep, there were also quite a few people that died from infections acquired from FMT recently and it’s safety is being questioned

Did they ever figure out what exactly caused these immunocompromised FMT recipients to die? Did all victims suffer from the same immune system disorder?

That's because only select bacteria from the stool are responsible for the cures people are getting from FMT. These are namely 'friendly' Clostridium bacteria. There is overwhelming evidence in both humans and animals that the cure for recurrent colitis regardless of the diagnosis is an increase in Clostridium XIVa cluster bacteria. For people with chronic conditions these bacteria were likely decimated by antibiotics or antimicrobials and never recovered. But as laypeople we have no way to get these bacteria apart from FMT or hoping that a company comes up with a probiotic form (e.g. what Rebiotix and SERES are trialing now).
This same doctor in this article has 45 patents, which includes bacteria cocktails (isolated from stool) he has used in the past to treat patients that have been successful, yet he now (to the best of my knowledge) only offers FMT. Refined bacteriotherapy works best, FMT is a shotgun approach because most clinics don't have the time, resources, legality, what have you to isolate and culture specific bacteria. That's why it is so hit or miss, because you really don't know what you're administering.
This was from one of his patents:
"Using liquid cultures of Clostridia, Bacteroides, Peptostreptococcus, Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium, and Lactobacillus the inventor has achieved total reversal of colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation."
I personally believe, and I know many will disagree, that regardless of your diagnosis (Crohns, UC, microscopic colitis etc) that the cause of the mast majority of recurrent colitis is caused by pathogenic Clostridia bacteria which will perpetually re-germinate until friendly Clostridia are restored.
