26 years ago I was diagnosed of Chron's. It was a devastating blow to me because I only had my first full-time job for less than 1 year. At the time, I had quite bad diarrhea that it started at 10PM and lasted through 6AM the next day. I could not fall sleep the nights after nights because I got up to go to the bath so often. I was seen by an IBD expert who prescribed me Pentasa, which did not help and Questran, which made me bleed.
Here is what I know about TCM: it originated thousands of years ago. It is an empirical medicine, i.e. it is based on repeated tests of herbs on human body. Some people from the West call it witch medicine. I do not agree, but I don't blame them for their ignorance. TCM doctors wrote volumes of books about its theory and experience. The books have been revised, refined and passed on from generations to generations. In TCM, there is no such a thing as virus or bacteria. TCM is about how to grow your own immune defense to fend off invading toxin. It is also about the "flow" in your body such as digestive flow, respiratory flow, etc.
26 years ago I quit my job, went to China and sought help from some of the leading TCM experts. Over the years I have consumed truckload of Chinese herbs. I still experience Chron's related symptoms and may need surgery in the near future. But looking back, I have no regret. For people in North America, if you do not have the faith, discipline and financial wherewithal, I would not recommend you go the TCM route, because I would not trust TCM doctors here.
