So yesterday I had to go to the ER because my pain was so bad...basically they put me on morphine when I was there and did a CT scan...the doctor just said it was bad constipation and He thinks I don't really have crohns. I explained my pain and he basically said I wasn't having pain where I said I was. Seriously getting pissed...they sent me home with a bowel prep and that's it...constipation is gone but I still have pain. Fired my GI doctor and got a new one and my internist is going to start me on prednisone and an antibiotic. Is prednisone really that bad? My mom had it recently and other than turning into mega***** I didn't see any other issues... I just want some relief :/

Long term pred is bad, but short term just depends on the person.

Short term pred can do wonders for some people, I felt great on it for the first 3 weeks usually, then kinda blah.  Long term can be nasty.  I was on it for a year and I now have deteriorating ankle bones and I'm no longer allowed to work.  Keep in mind I'm 24 years old.  When I was younger I didn't think about the long term effects because I thought they'd hit me in my 50's or later, well I was wrong.  I know you're young as well so make sure you think long term effects in every choice you make, I wish I had.

Prednisone is a great med for getting a flare under control quickly. My best advice is to only be on it a short time i.e. 2-3 months. You should also be on some kind of maintenance med also. It might be a good idea to start it with the Prednisone, as most take awhile to kick in. Good luck!

I've been on prednisone constantly for almost two years now.  It caused my vision to worsen the first year and a half, but it's stayed stable the last 6 months.  I have recently gained some weight, but that's because I used to work out a lot and had to stop working out completely due to arthritis issues.  So, other than vision changes, I've had no side effects...no moon face, buffalo hump, moodiness (no more so than normal  :-)  ). It really does help me but I've gotten to where I am physically dependent on it for the arthritis.  Dr. has tried to get me off of it many times, but nothing else works enough to be able to do that without the flare getting worse.

Make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D while you are on it. I was on it a few times, about 5 months each time. I'm twice your age (about) but still young to have been dx with osteoporosis. I've been an athlete my entire life, until a couple years ago, that is. But, it's amazing how quickly it kicks in.

You might also have trouble sleeping at the higher doses, so consider some way to get through that. (I use an over the counter antihistamine)
