I was having my typical blockage issue and had a regular doctors appointment, so of course she sent me right to the hospital. Under normal circumstances I would not have come. That being said, I have been here for 3 days now with no change. There is a bowel loop hung up on an adhesion, now i'm full of CT contrast but nothing is moving. The hospital doctor is talking about sending me home. While I would rather be sitting around at home, I don't want to have to come back and this is not clearing, my bowels are not moving, and I have not eaten anything except clear liquids. I'm waiting for my GI to consult but I don't really know what to think.

I would state with all the weather issues you guys are having that you are concerned that things are not moving and would prefer to stay to make sure another blockage doesn't occur.

oh zanne, I'm really sorry to hear this, I thought you had been doing OK lately. do you have NG tube, or they haven't felt you needed that, usually with obstruction they will stick you with ng. what is your prognosis? what do you think? you're defineatly a seasoned veteran with cd and surgery, I hope you're not at that point again. do you have any gas moving? once that starts you will be home free. take care, keep us posted

No N G tube, but no food since Sunday so not sure what will happen when I eat. I have only had minimal gas, nothing compared to what I normally have and certainly not what I would expect after all the barium I had. Now that I'm here I just want them to fix this problem and I think that will mean snipping the adhesion. Its looking less and less like they want to do anything. These blockages are taking longer to clear and happening more often. I am tired of it.

Hold the phone! They gave you barium instead of gastrograffin to check for a blockage. Oh, brother. Could be part of the issue. Next time ask for gastrograffin contrast it is water soluble unlike barium that can clump up on you.

They are supposed to keep you until you are all clear and able to tolerate soft foods. Tell them you are staying.

If these do not clear with just nothing by mouth (NPO), then they are supposed to do NG tube to decompress the small intestine so it will get out from behind that adhesion. Then if this does not do it, you may need adhesion take-down (lysis of adhesions). SOunds like they need some coaching. Good luck. Rosemary

that's exactly how I had my last resection. The blockages were every day, with at anytime after I ate, sometimes with not eating anything as well, you know how that is. But at least gas is moving,But I feel like you, if the gas is barley moving not like normal, something is not right. are you inflammed at resection site? do you flame up at resected site? I hope I'm not overwhelming you with Q's but I'm going thru the same thing now. Rem, I feel has kept me from having resection, but not pain free. I've had quite afew surg's as well, but after first large surg. then it was always at resected site, all my blockages are at the site, really all my pain is at that site, I guess that's why when I was diag. in 1970,like you, mine was called regional ilitis. concentrated in my ilieum only, I don't know if thats good, bad, or it doesn't matter. isn't your cd in ilieum as well? again with the Q's sorry. rest up

How can they send you home if nothing is moving?

I had a doctor give me some advice on the quiet when I was in danger of being discharged too early. She couldn't condone this, of course, and neither can I (and I didn't have to do it, and wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it anyway, but I'll pass on the advice regardless): she said to overstate your pain levels. Apparently they can't (or at least shouldn't) send you home if you're at 7 or above on the pain scale...

As I said, I don't condone this, but thought I'd pass on the info anyway.

Suzanne, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Do you know if you have bowel sounds? I would
not go home if nothing is moving. I know you probably won't get much of a say in it, but when you
get to consult with your regular GI I would tell him about your fears.

My GI just came in and set them all straight. They are giving me some miralax to try to move stuff. Not sending me home until I am moving my bowels and may end up with a surgery consult if things don't calm down. Feeling a bit more like they are listening now.

Barium caused me trouble too years past. Seemed to turn into concrete in my bowel. Glad they are holding you there until you improve.

I'm pleased about this. I know hospital stays aren't the best, but right now that's where you need
to be.

I agrree with esoR. My doc would never consider giving me barium. And, when I have a blockage, they don't let me leave until both gas and b.m. pass. I am so sorry you are going thru this.

Sorry to hear you're in the hospital, but glad to hear your GI has taken charge. And hey, if you need an op, just think how much better you'll feel after recovery. No more obstructions!

Sorry your going through this. Best advice is to chain yourself to the hospitol bed and say ,,," I ain't moving , untill something else is moving!!!", Yes I did clean that quote up for the moderators but you get my drift. Hope you feel better soon..

Love it Sniper!

I am so grateful for my GI right now. I have the same nurse from yesterday. When I asked for something for pain she very disdainfully said something about how the hospitalist was going to discontinue it yesterday and did I want to try Tylenol. Yay right. I told her that was before he spoke to my GI and no Tylenol would not work. Should be a fun shift since she clearly thinks I don't need to be here either.

I spent time in both a for profit hospital and a teaching hospital, it was amazing the difference between service. My spent my time at the first hospital retelling my condition to every nurse/doctor that walked through the door. It's all on the computer look it up for your self before you come see me so you have some sort of idea of whats going on.
At the other place all the nurses/doctors were so understanding and they really took the time to understand what was going on, they knew before coming in. The nurses communicated with eachother at shift changes and they talked to doctors. It was so much less stressful.

I hope that things start moving and you are more comfortable. Sounds like you have a good GI doctor that's on your side!

Zanne,

Sorry to hear you aren't well. Thank goodness for your GI. You are where you need to be, and I hope they rectify the problem sooner than later. You have had Crohn's for a long time and you know your body better then the nurse giving you grief instead of support.

Oh yeah!!! Thank God for your GI. Hopefully he will help to get this gunk out of you and get you feeling better. Grrr...I hate nurses like that who try to downgrade your pain, because they think its what you should do. Hang in there sweetie, and hoping for the best for you. Hugs!

Your stay sounds just like how mine went last month.  The nurses thought I had COPD because they were giving me prednisone.  Zanne, have confidence in yourself.  You and your GI are your two best advocates.  You can even ask to talk to your nurse's supervisor if you are not getting the help you need with pain meds.  Hold your ground, girl.  We have had this illness long enough to know our bodies and stand up for ourselves.  My prayers are with you for a speedy discharge. yeah

I wish I knew why pain issues are an 'issue' when we have to deal with some medical professionals.
Where is it written, that 'Crohns is an autoimmune disease that has no cure, however, it is painless'!!
Why do we have to fight? Why are we made to look like addicts? The last time I was in the ER, I had
this ER doc wave this injection of dilaudid in front of my nose, saying this was probably the only one
I would be given. Geez at that point I hadn't asked for any. All I thought I needed was IV fluids. Now
I'm a 59 year old, hardly look like a pill seeker, but was still treated as one. After he had spoken with
my primary, his whole attitude changed, and I was admitted. What a jerk!! And I'm afraid one of many!!
This has put me off from seeking medical attention when I probably should, and from now on I will travel
the miles to go to the hospital where my specialist is, even if it is emergent.

Zanne, I hope you don't have any further trouble with your nurse, and this all too familiar problem.

The nurses onion changed quickly when I stood up and threw up immediately in front of her.

I don't know why pain issues are such a big deal. I think for me I handle pain well and by that I mean I am stoic and am not curled up in a ball so maybe it is harder for them to believe that mypain is really at the level I say it is. And when push comes to shove I still would be home if I had not had a scheduled doctors appointment where I was forced to come here.

good morning Zanne, did they put in NG yet? with that vomiting one would think so, was your vomit bile? if it was and I was your gi, that is first thing I would do is install that tube, 4 days you will good to go. nothing should go thru your gut, especially bile. your gut needs total rest, no fluids nothing. they need to calm that area down. take care

I have noticed over the years myself, that people, even medical professionals, have a tough time believing the level of pain stated because "you look ok".  I have not been hospitalized over my issues.  But when going to the doc, and in the way way back, ER, after an episode they would ask how bad was the pain.  I gave my number (6-8) and the nurse was like, wow, that means bad pain like broken bones, are you sure you don't want to reconsider your number?  My point is stick to your guns about expressing how you feel, sucks you are in the hospital but sounds like you are in the best place for you at the moment.
