My husband was diagnosed with UC October 2009. He only responded to prednisone - asacol, imuran, cimzia did nothing. After a long fight with our insurance company, we were finally approved for remicaid. 1st dose Feb 1, 2012. Wonder drug. .. he had his life back ...for about a month & a half. He had a severe flare around 4weeks after 2nd dose. They moved his third dose up & during the infusion, his blood presssure dropped & he broke out in a cold sweat & nearly passed out. They stopped the infusion gave him something & sent him to the er where he was admitted for dehydration & observation. gi doc thinks it was a reactionto med, medical doc thinks it was drue to dehydration & weak system from having diarrhea for 4 days. We're hoping it's not the med since that's the only thing that was working. He's getting depessed because the gi doc keeps. Talking about surgery which scares us both.

The Remicade would not cause dehydration during the infusion. The Remicade is mixed into saline and administered via IV. It is likely is diarrhea prior to the infusion caused the dehydration. Being dehydrated when he got the infusion would then cause a more intense response to the Remicade. Hopefully the doctor will allow him to go forward [under careful monitoring] with the Remicade since it was working so well.
