Hi...I am new here and I could really use some help.
My dad has crohns disease and I may have it as well. I am 24 and my doctor has been running some diagnostic tests for about
9 months now. He also has me on pentasa and told me to play with the dosage and find out what works best for me. I'm currently taking 1000mg/3x a day.
My problem
I've had the occasional bleeding before...but the couple past days I have had a lot. I'm experiencing a mix of black stools and actual blood in my stool. I though the blood may just be from the hemmeroids but now I don't believe so. There is a decent amount mixed in and it is scaring me because I've never had it so many days in a row. Can it be the medicine? Should I be calling my dr or calming down?
Thanks in advance for any help

You should stay calm, but definitely call the doc first thing in the morn.
Black blood usually indicates bleeding further up in the digestive system and will probably need to be investigated. It is unfortunately common with CDers, and it is scary for all, but sometimes just part of inflammation or an ulcer, etc. Sorry you're going through this.
9 months is a long time to get diagnosed. Have you had a colonoscopy yet?
Let us now what the GI says.
Hope you feel better soon!

Hi, my daughter was having the same problems. She went to the Dr. and he did a colonoscopy and said that it was just inflammation. Hoping you get better soon.

Thanks guys...I'll call him tomorrow. I have had a colonoscopy in which he took a biopsy, an X-ray I can't remember what it was called but it was for the upper intestines, and bloodwork for the gene (which it doesn't show up in my dads bloodwork). I've had other blood tests to rule everything else out next we are doing the capsule that is a camera...again don't remember what it's called. So far he's only found inflammation, but he says I have a lot of symptoms and given the blood line ...

"only inflammation" is confusing. Crohn's is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), so if you have inflammation that would be indicative of an IBD diagnosis.
The blood on or in your stool is not caused by the Pentasa. And I'm amazed that the DR would prescribe Pentasa without an IBD diagnosis. Your dosage of Pentasa is pretty good but can go higher.

That's what I thought too but doctor knows best right? At least I hope so! I just know that I have a lot of the symptoms my dad has and have for quite some time and he really wanted me to get checked out because he didn't want me to go through everything he did...he waited too long to talk to a doctor. I have tried 2 pills four times a day but i was warned the side effects may include diarrhea and it did. I also had some cramping...but now I realize that I had the same thing when I started the medicine initially so I may try it again. He told me that it could still be just IBS and that he may not be able to diagnose but he would still treat my symptoms. I'm pretty confused about
the whole thing. I know I've been going to the bathroom a lot the past few days and there is blood every time in the stool

Keep an eye out on the bleeding. If it gets to be too sever give your doctor a call right away. I almost bled to death in 2006. And it was mostly all bright red!! This is because it was rushing out of me so fast that it did not have time to turn dark or black. I was bleeding from the end of my small intestine. At first I thought it wasn't serious because you always hear that red blood was okay.
Now I don't look at color as much, but I look at how much I'm bleeding. I just flared up this past month, and it all turned red again. I was very sick so I went to the ER, and was admitted again for a few days. Thankfully the bleeding got under control with prednisone they were putting in my IV. In 2006 they had to go in by Colonoscopy and close up an ulcer that was bleeding out. I lost half the blood in my body, and I was losing it fast.
I certainly don't want to scare you. Just want you to be aware of what can happen with us, and not to ignore LOTS of bleeding just because it's red. Keep an eye on things! Good luck!

call your doc asap! when i start to bleed worse than usual a quick higher dose of prednisone usually stops it pretty quick.

I think you need to get more testing done. I would suggest you speak to your doc about
getting another scope with biopsies, and a pill cam. For those who have a hard time getting a diagnosis, many have found that the pill cam is what finally got them their diagnosis. Scopes can only reach so far, you could have Crohns in your small bowel where the scopes can't reach and the pill cam will show that. Good luck and I hope the bleeding stops soon and they get you feeling better. Big hugs!

Thank you...I will call him today or tomorrow...I am getting the pill cam in feb. we were going to do it sooner but he said I would have to be off the pentasa until its completely out of my system to do it and get a proper diagnosis. He just waited on that because he said the insurance wouldn't cover it unless he did other tests first. I don't feel like the amount is too bad...I don't know. I'm only bleeding with a bm (that I know of)...but I am getting some cramping/sharp pain with it.
