Sedative for MRE?

I have a MRE scheduled for Thursday and I left a message for my GI asking for a sedative. Has anyone done this? Honestly, I don't NEED one, I have had at least 10 of these things, but I feel the more I do the harder it gets. The last one was the worst - I felt really fidgety and anxious and swore it would be my last for a while. I think I held out for 9 months before caving. I feel like I have heard of people with claustrophobia taking something to calm them before and it is the norm for kids, so I thought why not me then? Maybe make it a little less AWFUL.

Definitely get a sedative. Plenty of people need one. The MRI techs I've had are always real good about nervous patients too. My anxiety has always been less about the claustrophobia and more about having to run to the bathroom during it!

Thanks, he called back and emailed a script for a Xanax that I can pick up tomorrow. I have never taken this before, will I need a ride or will it just relax me a little but still be able to drive?

Yes, get a ride.

How sedated you are depends on how much xanax you take, but since you haven't taken it before, you don't know how you'll react. If you were to take it, then drive later, and get in an accident, you could be charged with driving under the influence. You don't want that to happen, so be safe and get a ride.

That was much easier! Well the actual MRI was easier, drinking that barium and then running to the bathroom all night was still as bad, but I'm glad it's over. I'm still a little groggy and have a four year old hanging all over me today, but it's clouding up outside so I may be able to declare it a movie day without feeling too guilty.
