Remicade is awesome. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I know the side effects can sound scary, but the really bad ones really aren't very common. It sounds worse than it is: for example (and I am making these percentages up), if a medication says "triples your cancer risk" it sounds bad, but if the cancer risk is normally only 2%, then your risk is only 6%. Does that make sense?
I have been on Remicade for 3 years now and it literally saved my life. I have had to up my dose to double the starting amount and do it every 6 weeks instead of 8 weeks, but out of all of the meds, it has been the most effective with the least amount of side effects. I feel a little crummy the day or two after the infusion, maybe a migraine, but that's it. Mesalamine and imuran didn't really work and then gave me pancreatitis that landed me with a feeding tube for a while. So seriously, Remicade is great.
Most GI doctors now just start out with Remicade instead of messing around with other meds because they are less effective and take longer to work.
