Did anyone try a nasogastro tube? How painful is it?

I posted that I’m having a problem with swallowing mannitol and even after my GI explained to the radiologist how difficult it is for me to tolerate it without throwing up incessantly, the radiologist insisted I have to drink this mannitol whether I’ll have a CT enterocolonography or an MR enterocolonography. So, my GI decided I would have an ultrasound on my colon and intestines and they would inform me of the schedule. This same scenario happened a couple of years ago and my GI suggested then that he would place a nasogastric tube and give me the mannitol but I refused the idea then. I’m contemplating it now given that the pain is unbearable and I’m really thinking of asking to change Remicade and switching to any other biologic. My GI and I already discussed this issue last time but he mentioned that he didn’t want to change it now given that my trough level is high and I haven’t developed any antibodies. If I ask to have a nasogastric tube placed in my stomach, would it be painful? Three years ago, my GI scheduled me for an impedance PH 24 hr test where they would place a tube in my nose and down into my esophagus but when the doctor was preparing me to start the procedure, I panicked and refused to undergo it. Is placing a nasogastric tube traumatic and how can I overcome any fear?

Minnie, are you sure it's mannitol they give? I looked at Drugs.com & it says it's given to people with kidney failure, available in an injection or pill form. Needless to say, I'm confused.

I do not know if an NG would even be allowed for a CT or MRE scan. I have had NG tubes 3 different times while in the hospital for complete bowel rest. I hope I never have to have another one again, they are not pleasant being inserted. I would rather have a cscope any day of the week over an NG tube.

I would stay with having the ultrasound, if you have inflammation it should be able to detect it. If inflammation is found, then perhaps it's time to discuss switching medication.

You asked about Stelara in the UC forum if it would take care of proctitis. I can't answer that question because we all metabolize these medications differently.

One more thought, have you ever tried Bentyl? It is an antispasmodic, this may be something to discuss with your dr too.

I am so sorry you are going thru this. I hate that we have to accept things that are "uncomfortable" just to get answers.

I've had the NG tube 2 or 3 times. Most times my doctor's gave me enough medications to make it so I could cooperate without being fully asleep. I still remember some the process. It was pretty awful. I hope to never have one again.

Straydog and Clo, thank you. Forless than a month my GI was suspecting malignancy. Had the ultrasound and it showed nothing except for calcular gallbladder disease with many gall stones that rendered the examination very painful. We agreed that I won’t have any CT or MRE at the time being, will stick to the 8 week Remicade schedule and switch to Pentasa suppository as my pain is triggered by Pentasa enema, may be it is one of the excipients that irritates my colon.

Minnie, what is the plan with your gallbladder. If you have many gallstones seems to me you should be referred to a surgeon for a consultation. Gallstones can cause some of the symptoms you have been complaining about for quite some time.

I remember I had a resection and I woke up with an NG tube but they never told me. I thought I was going to suffocate and didn't know why? I was on an mechanical ventilator but didn't know it with an NG tube in that I didn't know I had. I was a former smoker and lied on the sheet you fill out to get the operation. Without the operation I would have died. I have scar tissue in my throat from smoking and after the operation I couldn't sleep at all for 3 days until I got that NG tube out. My biggest problem was breathing with the thing in. I nearly drowned when I was a child and had flashbacks with the NG tube in.
