Peter, this is probably his best song, "Johnny B. Goode" in 1958, which he wrote and you can listen to on www.youtube.com.
Karen is right when she says, "He was awesome. It was a long time ago. .Towards the beginning of rock and roll!"
I don't have to look that up in some music history book, I remember it when he came out with his first hit song in 1955, "Maybeleen."
Rock and Roll started in about
1954, with "Rock around the Clock," being one of the first such songs. Elvis came along in 1955, and I remember that, but Chuck Berry preceded him.
"Johnny B. Goode" was inspired by Johnny Johnson, his piano player, it said in this morning's paper, but I always thought it was about
Chuck Berry, with the article stating that his mother encouraged him, as was said about
Johnny be Goode in the song.
It's almost like a member of the family dying when you've known this guy's music for that long. Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones are paying tribute to him.
He was among the first and the best.
"Johnny B. Goode"
Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood
Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well
But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track
Oh, the engineers would see him sitting in the shade
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made
People passing by they would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
His mother told him "Someday you will be a man,
And you will be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight."
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
Songwriters
CHUCK BERRY
