Mostly I just follow her lead and love her!

She's in great spirits and fairly decent health - has kidney disease so drinks a TON of water and pees like a racehorse, but so far so good. Eventually she won't be able to keep herself hydrated and I'll have to do subcutaneous fluids. Some days her appetite is poor, so if I notice her breakfast is still on the plate I carry it to wherever she is -- generally she'll get up & eat when I do that.

Hope you find some litter your little guy will accept!

you antique kitty, might be finding it to exhausting to pile up the litter as they like. May I suggest putty bed pads down around the litter box.

I say adult bed pads, they are less expensive, larger and more absorbent.

Lynn-My elder cat (died near 19) preferred the wheat litter, and I laid down the pads around the litter box. I also bought a lower box she had less trouble getting into. I laid pillows everywhere she liked to sleep--and constructed two or three stage "steps" onto furniture and beds for her. I still miss our nightly positions--where I would lie on my back and read in bed, and she would climb onto my stomach and chest and purr madly.

Take the 'new' stuff back to the store. Why not go back to what you had been using?

Sometimes, it's not the scent that bothers them...it's the texture. The lightweight cat litter is a different texture than the others and can get caught in the paws and in their nail beds.

Anytime you want to change the type of litter used, mix half old and half new for a few changes. Then a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio, then 1/4 to 3/4 ratio. I've done this with litter and I've done this when I changed their food brand, too. Hasn't failed me yet.

Actually, the idea of mulch is not a bad one. I have a friend with an indoor/outdoor cat, and the cat peed NEXT to the litter box until the day she covered the litter with mulch - I'd forgotten about that. Perhaps a 50-50% mix with mulch & litter would help your fellow.

When a litter trained cat stops using the box a trip to the vet is in order to rule out an illness.
However I must say for the last 2 years of her life my 20 year old cat went just outside the box and it was nothing more than old age. She also had the runs and puked frequently. It was very sad but just part of life. The vet took all kinds of blood tests but nothing was wrong.
