Happy Hollies Everyone!
I was pondering all the stress and anxiety that this time of year brings. How it builds knowing family are on their way in for the Christmas celebration. Who will be staying where, bring what, behaviors anticipated and dreaded.
Well, it does not have to be so terrible. We can choose not to let those people that use to get under our skin and annoy or upset us, do it this year. Using our skills it is possible to actually hold on to our peace!
Breathing is one skill that is so important. It is a ready go to, it can be done with no one realizing you are doing it.
Breathe in slow, breathe out slow just a bit longer, 5 - 7 breaths and the body system naturally calms.
another:
Count to 5 while making eye contact, and do not react when that relative tries to push your buttons. This one is know is harder. The emotions from childhood can pop up and you are right back there. A voice is right on the tip of your tongue ready to yell, "when are going stop?" 'You are such a jerk". Ahh but this is what that person wants, a reaction.
Counting to 5 gives you the space, to excuse yourself, go outside for 2 mins. or the bathroom and wash your hands or face in cold water, bring the emotions down.
Any skills that work for you, except self harming actions, are important to keep in your back pocket. If you keep reacting to another persons behavior , they will not change. If you change they may. However, the guarantee is that you will have a more calm and rewarding holiday!
I wish everyone a calm, peaceful and joyous holiday.
