Phobias are pretty much fears. And if you are going through it, the best thing I think to do is get counseling. Phobias can seem very real but often are not. It is just the fear can be debilitating. They can cause all sorts of problems in life. Such as making people so afraid that they can't leave their own houses. I hope you are not going through this, but I sense you are or you know somebody who is.

They are quite common, although they can be managed and eased. Sending positive thoughts. HT

They are irrational fears borne out of the mind's convictions and not logical evidence or reason. Many can be cured by limited exposure to the offending agent. As a specific example, I used to have a minor case of arachnophobia, but not really anymore after catching some spiders and taking a closer look (and also noting that they tend to be beneficial by preying on other insects and vermin).

I wish I could get over my arachnophobia that easily :/ I'm all right with some species - namely the outdoor ones that don't make my home their home - but large house spiders give me the Fear. I think this year I'm going to get a spider repellent spray because I'm tired of living in fear of seeing a spider during the summer and autumn. Can't rationalise my way out of feeling terrified of the sight of a house spider.

I can understand the natural revulsion, as I had it as well, but it seems just getting used to the sight of spiders helped, as well as learning which species they are (mostly ground or gnaphosid spiders here, which aren't poisonous). It also helps that they do their best to get away, especially since they have far more reason to be afraid of you than vice versa.

Seriously, if I looked up right now and saw that next to my window I'd be halfway down the road already sad

@paul - I don't know how bad your phobia was but mine is really bad unfortunately. And I don't get any opportunity to see spiders in a safe setting (my flat is not a safe setting!). I have thought about trying to watch spider videos on YouTube as a form of exposure therapy but I have to be careful not to make the fear even worse.
