Here is the 7th set of quotes from literature. Except these aren’t quotes from literature. These have to do with poetry. But they are still in keeping with Joyce’s (PaGrandma’s) column that was on this forum and which consisted of jokes and witticisms.
I filled in for her for a week and my columns had a lot of sayings in them. So when I saw some, in this case, poems, they also reminded me of those sayings I used to put into those columns.
The person who initiated the column was Joyce, who was really nice. At one time she was a radio announcer in Manhattan. Her career as an artist included magazine and book illustration, commercial art, and sculpture, as noted in her obit sent to the website by one of her sons.
Her last column was on May 1, 2018. She passed away Dec. 19, 2018, at 83, according to her obit.
One of Joyce’s items in one of her columns on Oct. 9, 2016, was:
Did you know
The expression cooked "al dente" means "to the tooth."
What this means is that the pasta should be somewhat firm, and offer some resistance to the tooth, but should also be tender
Just a groaner
What do you call fake spaghetti?
An im-pasta

1. The value of a smile is priceless, yet it is the cheapest, easiest, most rewarding and most sincere gift to anyone that crosses your path. A smile makes a person's day, anybody's day even a stranger's day. A smile is infectious. Start infecting people with your smile today.
2. A smile is nature's best antidote for discouragement. It brings rest to the weary, sunshine to those who are sad, and hope to those who are hopeless and defeated.
3. A smile is so valuable that it can't be bought, begged, borrowed, or taken away against your will. You have to be willing to give a smile away before it can do anyone else any good.
4. So if someone is too tired or grumpy to flash you a smile, let him have one of yours anyway. Nobody needs a smile as much as the person who has none to give.
Smile
She smiled at a sorrowful stranger.
The smile seemed to make him feel better.
He remembered past kindness of a friend
And wrote him a thank you letter.
The friend was so pleased with the thank-you
That he left a large tip after lunch.
The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip,
Bet the whole thing on a hunch.
The next day she picked up her winnings,
And gave part to a man on the street.
The man on the street was grateful;
For two days he'd had nothing to eat.
After he finished his dinner,
He left for his small dingy room.
(he didn't know at that moment
that he might be facing his doom)
On the way he picked up a shivering puppy
And took him home to get warm.
The puppy was very grateful
To be in out of the storm.
That night the house caught on fire
The puppy barked the alarm.
He barked till he woke the whole household
And saved everybody from harm.
One of the boys that he rescued
Grew up to be President.
All this because of a simple smile
That hadn't cost a cent.
