Last Friday a Nurse/Diabetes Nutritionist came to my local senior center to teach us about
proper nutrition for the diabetic. I was very interested in this meeting. It was early ( 9 AM) when I arrived I was greeted by a huge table filled with sandwiches of egg, ham, sausage and bacon on gigantic croissants. There was fruit salad in heavy syrup and large glasses of orange juice and apple juice. Added to this feast was a plate of sugar-free oatmeal
cookies.
When the nurse asked if we had any questions or comments I raised my hand and told her that the croissants, the fruit salad and the juices would cause high sugar, she became upset and told me that this food was within the ADA guidelines for diabetics when eaten in moderation.
I sat through an hour long meeting shocked to the soles of my feet while this nurse told a room full of diabetics that we should eat wheat bread
at every meal...drink milk and fruit juices so we could be properly nourished. She said we could eat cold cereal for breakfast or hot oatmeal...
The nurse did explain carbohydrates...simple and complex. She talked a bit about portion control. When she was finished she urged us to take the left over sandwiches home with us so they wouldn't go to waste. Several people were more than happy to pack up the food and thanked her for the great meeting.
I'm still shocked...Joni
