Metformin new user: Help with stomach issues.

I just started taking Metformin 500mg twice a day. I started off with 500mg per day for over a week and now I have been on full dosage for a month and my stomach stays queasy, and moderate feeling of nausea. Because of this, I haven't been eating much and lost three pounds this past month. BTW, my glucose hovers around 100 and A1c just hit 5.7. I started taking Metformin mostly for off-label reason, cancer. I read that GI issues should have improved over time, but it hasn't.

Now my question: I read the Extended Release Metformin is far more tolerable with far less gastric issues. Is this true? Is anybody using ER Metformin?

I did inform my doctor know of my stomach issues. He wants me to go back down to 500mg once a day for a week to see if it reduces my problems. Otherwise he has no problems sending in a script for Extended Release metformin.
