I have had CFS since i was 14, and only officially diagnosed with Fibro 2 years ago. So i know less about Fibro compared to my other illnesses. Anyway, my question is this: Last week the Fibro flared on a whole new level, like someone wrenched my shoulder blades and punched them back in. I could barely stand, couldnt raise my arms over my head- and normally that happens when i really exert myself, or lift something too heavy etc. however there was no obvious trigger for this intensity of pain. then a friend suggested it could be the weather? last week winter finally ARRIVED with bells on. below zero temps etc (im in australia) and i realised that my extreme pain coincided with the weather going from nice autumn temps to freezing icy cold. could this explain my pain?

Hi

Yes it could be releted to the weather. I am fairly new to fibro as well but I have noticed that extreme temp one way or the other will affect the pain.  Also rain affects mine.

Hi Maz.  It always amazes me when I think about the fact that there are folks who are in the throes of winter when it is hotter than blazes here. :-)

 

I do always have flares when the weather changes or when the temperatures are extreme. 

 

I've also noticed that just the slightest little thing (like sleeping on a shoulder wrong) can send my muscles into extremely painful spasms.  I was doing a very gentle stretching exercise with my shoulders a couple of months ago, got a weird spasm, and was in serious pain for days.  I could hardly move my arms.  I've done this stretch many times before without a problem, but on this day, I guess I just didn't count to 26, think about rainbows, stick my tongue out and touch my nose, and hold my foot with the opposite hand while saying the alphabet backwards before I did the stretch.  turn    smilewinkgrin

Fibro is so incredibly unpredictable and touchy!

Hi Mazfire,

The winters don't bother me so much, but oh my gosh, the rain sure does. And it is summer here in Florida and the rains are on!!

I am in a flare right now myself and the whole of my back and ribs and fingers and toes and legs and feet----well there isn't a place on me that doesn't really hurt. Even my fingernails hurt!!

Misery loves company, but I'm sorry you are hurting hon. Here's praying for a lpd and a blessing from up above, eh?? I'll say one for you.

Hi Mazfire.  Yes weather plays a huge role in my pain.  I can be fine in the morning and then if the barometer starts to change I can become so sick I have to go to bed.  Headaches and neck pain are the first usually and yes a lot of times shoulders feel like an ice pick is stuck in them.  I think a lot of people with fibro are affected by the weather. 

 

It also surprises me to think of cold weather right now.  We are going to be 104 today.  But if any changes (clouds nearby, windy weather) I'll start to feel bad.

Yes, Maz, I'm with this group!  When the barometric pressure changes it can make my fibro worse.  I really can barely tolerate cold weather.  I, too, live in Florida and the rain is what gets to me now.  Summer is always my worst season in Florida.  So, this is probably what is going on with you.  If you can, try to get a good gentle massage.  That does help me a lot.

I am with all of you! The barometric pressure is what sets off flairs in me, seems to be worse during the winter months and summer months, hot temps setting off thunderstorms, as is what is currently happening, as we speak! Years and years ago, I mentioned it to my rheumy and she looked at me as if I had two heads. I had been noticing that my flares coincided with the weather changes. Well, it wasn't too long that she told me I was on the right track. I hate being smarter than my doctor :)

I totally agree its the barometric pressure. The barometer is like a clock for me. When it changes, I do too. And the winters, I don't know why I live in MN. Thank goodness I can retreat to Mexico for a few months.

Just the other day my dr. told me that barometric pressure changes in the atmosphere can change the pressure in your joints. They can get larger or smaller and that causes pain. Diane

I live in beautiful Australia, but there is a catch with the particular area that I live in. In winter, we get below zero temps that freeze you crazy, and in summer we get the highest temps around- I get both extremes. Its either really cold or really hot- not too much inbetween. ive never noticed a correlation between my pain and rainy weather, but i will look out for it. yesterday before work i had to get the ice off my windscreen so i could see as i drove. yet in summer we swelter and are prone to major bushfires etc.

I also think my mattress is to blame- it cost a fortune and was super comfortable for ages, but now the springs have collapsed on one side and so im sleeping kinda crooked. im not in a position right now to buy the bed of my dreams (ive seen it, ive tested it out, but its AU $6,000 dollars) and contrary to popular belief (or the beliefs of my students) teachers are not paid particularly well.

Again, thankyou so much for taking the time to reply. My mum is a nurse and she was on nights last week and in a moment of quiet on the ward, she googled 'Fibro' and printed off info so she and my dad can be as understanding as possible. they are used to me being in poor health (see my signature) but they are still confused a bit as to what fibro really entails.

This is just a real bad flare. I think i will go and have a warm bath with radox salts in mum and dads ensuite spa. in my bathroom, the tub is tiny and im 6ft tall- trust me its not relaxing. Thanks so much again. Im usually in AP or Depression but whenever i come to Fibro, i am always treated like part of the family, so I thankyou.  you are truly compassionate people.

Totally ... I live in Germany and I was all but immobile in the winter!

But also it seems sometimes random things cause a spike in pain. For example, sneezing hurts, which is bad for me because I am allergic to Germany! Other times I will be walking up the stairs, which I do every day since I live on the second floor, and suddenly my back will hurt like nobody's business!

Being an Aussie can be a pain I live in Queensland and we may not get the cold weather that they have down south but I am over the wet weather it drives me crazy. And the cold that is straight pain for me, where ever I get cold it is like someone has cut me with a knife the wet weather makes the pain so much worse I can tell five days before it rains in fact family friends will ask me if there is rain coming I hated the drought we live on rain water but the dry was great for my Fibro. So you ae in my prayers I have the flu at present so that is not helping me at all.
