hi all, as you can see from my problems below, i am in alot of pain most of the time.
I have a cane to walk with when outside, as i have alot to hand onto at home, i have had the occupational therapist round to see me and they have put in alot of stuff to help me out inc. sofa raisers, a bath lift, toilet frame, along with other things.
i also have a wheelchair, which i just use for long shopping trips or if im too bad to just go to 1 shop. i try to stay as active as i possibly can, as i like to be independant as much as i can.

i am just wondering if anyone else with fibro needs to use as many things as i do and how they handle the embarrassment of being in a wheelchair with everyone staring at u?

I think that when you are in a wheelchair, people are going to automatically look, be it to see if you need some assistance or to see what is wrong with you. I think it is just curiosity on other people's part. Not that they are necessarily staring.

I don't need a cane or wheelchair (yet). I am fortunate that I can still walk around okay. But am sorry that you are suffering. I hope that you do have a nice day. Take care, keep on moving around. That is so good for us.

Hi Amy, I do own a cane, but rarely need to use it. People tend to look...I have
a cool cane...looks like a giant mahogany screw.

Exercise has helped me feel better. I'm a walker and walk up to 3 miles a day. I
feel it is important to keep moving....muscles can atrophy when they don't get a
work out. Inactivity makes me feel stiff and my muscles ache more. I push myself
to get a walk in even when I'm flaring. Exercise and relaxation therapy have helped
me more than anything...it's a great stress reliever, and if i can keep my stress
down...I keep my pain down. In the past, I believe many of my flares were due
to stress. Doing what I can do to prevent that is important to me!

I agree with Karen...people see a wheelchair and they are curious. I'm happy
that you were able to get things to help you around the house.

I too want you to know amy that I am thinking and praying that you will feel better soon. I am still able to walk around and we do have some things like a bath bench in our house but it is more for my husband. He has Multiple Sclerosis. I am feeling weaker lately but that is becuase I am undergoing chemotherapy right now. I do understand what you go through with the wheel chair. I broke my sacharrin in my back and my pelvic bone a couple years ago and had to use a wheelchair to get around. I guess I really didnt notice the people staring maybe its because Im so used to my husband getting the looks when he is riding his scooter. For me the frustration was trying to get around in the clothing section and trying to reach things that has never been a problem for me before because I am 5'7". Sorry Im rambling here. Once again just want you to know that Im praying for you.

Hi,
I use a cane and I have a walker (with a seat on it) for longer trips. I am still in my 30's so I get alot of stares, people trying to figure out why a young person walks like she is in her 80's! I just smile and keep moving. Usually people will be nice if you act like that is your expectation, but if you act too timid or embarrassed about your mobility aides then, in my experience, you will get worse attention and not the kind you appreciate...if you know what I mean. So hold your head high, they are just tools like any other. Nothing wrong with getting the help you need!
