Hi, Caitlin, and welcome! I think all of us at some point have had back spasms. I know I have. I do take ibuprofen but never more than three at a time and never more than twelve a day...that's the highest "safe" amount. I also ALWAYS take it with food. It can be very hard on your stomach. I have had bleeding ulcers from it but have been put on other medication now to help protect my stomach. So, do be careful with ibuprofen or Advil...any of the NSAIDs.
The grabbing around the rib cage could possibly be costochondritis. Quite a few of us have that also...me included...but the ibuprofen should help with that.
I do get a massage monthly but make sure it's a gentle massage. Deep massages can hurt you more. A gentle massage really seems to help me quite a bit. Just make sure your massage therapist knows how to massage fibromyalgia clients.
Many times our pain is referred pain. We may have a lot of pain in our sides but it's actually coming from our back...usually along the spinal column. We get what is called trigger points. They are extremely tender and feel like marbles under the skin. I found a wonderful book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook on Amazon. It has illustrations that show, for example, if you are having pain in a certain area, where to look for the trigger point that is causing you the pain. I use a tennis ball against a wall to "massage" those trigger points. It hurts at first but you keep massaging it until it gets smaller. You will know because it won't hurt that bad. You should find that painful area is better, too. I've done this in the middle of the night, even, and it really helps me.
Be sure to read Fibro 101...the first thread on the forum. There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there. Good starting links are called Symptoms and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. There is also a link about costochondritis so you might want to read that and see if that is what you are experiencing.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you. Hope to hear more from you soon.
