Hello, everyone.

I have RA and Fibro. I have had a lot of burning pain in my thighs. I cannot take Cymbalta or Savella because it raises my bp. I was in so much pain last week, I could only walk a short distance. My orthopedic doc prescribed Elavil...25 mg. I have slept for eight hours straight the last two nights and the pain in my thighs is 75% better. I am simply amazed, and wondering why my other docs didn't try this drug a long time ago. Just interested in the med...anyone else on it...has it worked for a long period of time for you for nerve pain?

Hi Vannie:  I don't have much time to post this AM--just popping in to read a few posts, but if you type 'Elavil' in the search box above, there are quite a few threads.

I didn't take Elavil for fibro; it was for chronic diarrhea of an unknown cause (this was in the early '90s).  I very rarely take it now, but when I do, I find I'm extremely sensitive to it.  I have to go to sleep about an hour or so after I take it (50mg), and am tired the entire next day!  So, I rarely take it anymore!

Hope you get some responses from those taking it for fibro.  I do know it can cause weight gain--something few of us need.

Thanks for your response, Luvzminis. I did read it can cause weight gain or weight loss. Bleh! I have been on it for just three days now, but I am not excessively hungry, like I am when I take high doses of prednisone. I am trying so hard to lose weight. I hope I don't have that side effect. I was in sooo much pain, that I am thankful for this med right now. MRI scheduled for my lower back sometime this week. They will call me w/the time. I could hardly walk before I started Elavil. Guess we will see what the MRI shows.

Hi Vannie

Im on Elavil also...50mg. I can't really tell if it does much for me sleep wise, but helps numb my pains...I do notice more when I haven't been on it though. Been back on it about 2 months now

It causes me mouth problems and really dry skin and mouth..I have to take extra fish oils and eat loads of nuts / seeds and drink tons of water to compensate.

Have to say though, I know a lot of people on it, not just for fibro and many people at my work think it is a wonder drug..Its an old fashioned one and you kind of know what your getting with it I suppose.

Hi Vannie,

After both of my TMJ discs were replaced 14 years ago, (Prior to my fibro diagnosis), I had sharp, continuous pain that encircled my head...it wasn't a migraine, and the pain meds seemed to only work on the surgical areas of my jaw.

I was given Elavil which worked wonders. I only needed it for about 2 months.
