Hi Everyone,

I've been reading lately how chronic fatigue syndrome, which is closely related to fibromyalgia, and having allergies and sensitivities can be connected. Here's a great article:

Yesterday I spent a good amount of time outdoors at one of our condo complexes here in Florida. I love this state but my community unfortunately uses a lot of pesticides. I didn't see any birds, no insects, and the flowers and grass were lush and beautiful. I hope we are not harming our eco system but more importantly I hope we are not harming ourselves.

A few hours later I came down with a migraine, nausea, stomach upset, increased muscle pain, increased sinus issues, tightness in the chest, constriction in my throat, and eventually I vomited. My episode couldn't have been food related. I ate nothing usual.

Does anyone else have concerns about pesticides?

My lawn is sprayed once a month and I also have extermination services for my home every six months and I don't have any problems with it. My grass isn't over-ridden with fire ants and bugs that eat the roots of the grass and my flowers and shrubs are beautiful. The cockroaches that live in the soil aren't bothered with the pesticides that are used. I do see them when gardening. They don't hurt a thing and just help loosen the soil.

I have a ton of cardinals, bluejays. Rose-breasted tohees, mourning doves and the occasional sandhill cranes. I have many plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, too. I also have many squirrels that love to eat the flowers off my hibiscus and hundreds of anolls (lizards). Needless to say, the pesticides that are used on my property aren't hurting wildlife...except unwanted bugs. AND the pesticides don't bother me either.

Thanks for your reply, Sherrine. Your yard and garden sound beautiful. It's good to hear that pesticides don't bother you. And I loved hearing about the types of birds and bugs you get in your area.

My area gets a lot of tourists and we have a lot of seasonal people that come in starting this time of year. We have a lot of condo complexes. So I imagine we have more pesticide use here. We even have a plane that flies over the condo complexes and sprays pesticides.

We don't have pesticide planes where I am. I wouldn't like that at all. You're breathing that while it's being sprayed. Do you get notification as to when they will spray your area? I've never heard of this in all the areas I've been in Florida! Just for farms if necessary. The condo associations just hire people to come and spray each individual lawn where I live.

We have a lot of seasonal people here, too, but that and tourists should have nothing to do with spraying overhead. If anything, that should be a deterrent!

I wish you had checked everything out before you bought there. The overhead spraying and the asphalt plant would have kept me from buying in that area if I had the sensitivities that you have. It must not bother most residents. If it did, that condo complex would be empty and the EPA would be down their throats.

I'm in a deed restricted development but we choose if we want to have our lawn sprayed or not. Chinch bugs are about everywhere in Florida and will kil your lawn. If it kills my lawn I would have to replace it and that would be several thousands of dollars. Instead I spend $40 a month to have my lawn sprayed against this and Fire ants, fleas, ticks, etc.

Kids play in the grass, pets are in the grass, and there doesn't seem to be a problem.

Guilty, when it comes to not having checked into pesticide application and the asphalt plant. We thought it was just a cement plant.

This is a gorgeous area. We keep our windows closed and we're watching for other options in the other parts of our city to move to.

Sherrine, you gave us a great idea. We're going to contact the county service that applies the insecticide by plane for mosquito control. Then we'll know when I shouldn't leave the condo.

It's surprising to hear that your area doesn't do the application by plane for mosquito control. Are you in the southern 2/3 of the state? We heard the southern 2/3 of the state is doing this kind of application. Maybe we're wrong about that.

I was just going to write you that the overhead spraying must be for mosquito control. We did have that once when there was an outbreak of a disease that is caused by mosquito bites...but only once in the 18 years I've lived here. And we were told when they would be spraying our area. If you live close to a swampy area that could be why there is so much spraying but you should be notified. Maybe they are just putting it on the news in your area. I think we got the info in the mail here.

I'm in the Tampa Bay Area. We don't seem to have a huge mosquito problem but I'm in screening at dusk when they are out buzzing around. I don't walk my dog at night either.

I don't think they are applying pesticides for the lawns using airplanes. That would be a first for me! I know I would be finding out..for sure...what was being applied this way and how you will know ahead of time when your area will be sprayed.

Thanks, Sherrine. Yes, there are some areas around here that are still swamps.

I'm not saying anything to anybody about this. I don't want to worry my neighbors unnecessarily. If I would have decided to say something, a lot of people wouldn't understand anyway.

I am very sensitive to odors from asiago cheese to commercial landscape chemicals. I have a garden & drought tolerant L/S & PEST i purchased a non pesticide help OMG CHEMICAL Smell not using it ever again! I enjoy the bees, mantis', hummers in my garden makes me HAPPY & keeps me MOVING.
My taste is so heightened deli meat taste like the FRIDGE & Stale is GROSS.

Hi pepper, I know what you mean about food odors.

Let me know if you find a healthy alternative to pesticide control in the home.

I love nature too! Your garden sounds like a blessing for you.

I don't do deli meat either. We love to do fresh fish especially the ones with omega 3's like wild salmon and tuna, hormone free-chicken, and organic ground turkey for our protein.

This evening we wanted to use up our leftover fresh tuna, so I made tuna salad sandwiches. They were great!
