This year was not so bad but it was full of medical procedures.

I was put under anesthesia 3x within an 8 month period of time. This was for two completely different surgeries. The first was in March and the other times in October.

During the latter on the anesthesiologist was unable to insert the breathing tube down and the doctor stopped the surgery. After that I was pumped full of steroids and sent home. I tell you, that procedure was painful even though they did not operate. I had swollen breathing and throat passages for several weeks.

Furthermore, two weeks after that attempt they performed the real surgery. You know, I do not think my body likes steroids. Each time I was given some I had a major flare.

I feel pretty old nowadays because I have not regained my previous level of strength. My daughter says I am impatient (the nerve).

Overall the surgeries were successful and all pathologies benign. However, I do not even fell like my old fibro self, much less anything I felt like previous to fibro.

You sure have had to endure a lot this year. Happy to hear the pathologies were benign. That is great news!

My cousin is an orthopedic surgeon, and he once told me that it takes a year for your body to recover from general anesthesia. I thought that was crazy until I had a hysterectomy years ago. After that, I thought he really did know what he was talking about.

Please be patient with yourself and give your body time to heal. So sorry you have had so much medical chaos to deal with this year. Hopefully 2011 will be much, much better for you and for us all!

Hi, Donnaeil, and welcome back!  I was wondering where you have been!  I'm so sorry you went through all of that but now it's behind you and you can get your strength back.  You are a determined lady and you will do it.  Just get back in that pool and it will do you wonders!

 

I was just getting off Prednisone when I was hit with fibromyalgia.  I think several people have had that happen.  I think I'm going to do a post about that and see how many we have that steroids have affected them and their fibro. 

 

Well, we have a brand new year now so let's start fresh and continue to get stronger and healthier.  We all can do this together.  Glad you are back, Donnaeil!

Vannie thanks for the information about anesthesia. I was wondering if that was the main reason I felt so exhausted.

Sherrine, the steroids/pain/fibro connection feels real. It is bad that my MD does not believe in prescribing pain relievers for fibro, I could use some now. Muscle relaxants are not enough.

Sounds like you might need another doctor, Donnaeil.  My doctor isn't crazy about giving narcotics but I do have one, unrefillable one in my medicine cabinet...my little security blanket.  I haven't taken any but just knowing they are there helps.  Can you take over the counter pain medications?  Those have helped me a lot over the years.

A couple of years ago, my doctor decided he would no longer prescribe narcotics for chronic pain because he read a lot of studies which cited cognitive decline in patients.

I had just received test results on my cognitive ability and scored in the 89th percentile (go figure). So I asked him "How smart do you want me to be?"

He is only referring me to pain specialists who either do nothing or prescribe muscle relaxants. I can only take them at bedtime unless I want to feel dopey all day.

The US War on Drugs has contributed to the under treatment of chronic pain patients. I hope this ends in my lifetime. Suffering makes no sense when help exists.

Furthermore, I hope someone can recommend a doctor in Seattle who is useful for a person who has fibromyalgia. At this point, I am willing to pay outside of my insurance.
