I know rheumatologists specialty is diseases of the joints and I did go to one that did not seem to know much about
fibro. What kind of doctor do you see that has helped the most.
Thanks for responding

Hey Mystic,
Check your area for a physiatrist. They specialize in muscle nerve and bone disorders. Mine treats fibro of course and has it himself! !! He has written some best selling books on fibromyalgia. Hope this helps

I see a DO myself, and my psychiatrist is mind and "body". So that helps there too. I use to see an internal medicine doctor.
A lot of people go to rheumatologists and as Michael said a physiatrist. Which sounds like a good idea. I am not familiar with that, but if they treat muscle and nerve disorders, that sounds perfect.
Are you seeing a doctor at the present time? If so, what type of doctor is he/she? I saw an MD before and they were very good.
I hope you find what works for you...
Hugs, Karen...

You need to do your homework when choosing a doctor. The American Board of Rheumatology recognizes fibro as a true illness but yet there still are a few doctors out there that are in the Dark Ages when it comes to fibro.
I suggest a board certified rheumatologist. They deal not only with arthritis and joints but also connective tissue diseases, fibromyalgia, and a whole lot more. Here is a link that explains all that a rheumatologist does.

Ask friends if you know some with arthritis. If there is an arthritis support group in your community, give them a call. The local Chamber of Commerce might be able to help you to see if you do have such a support group. You can check doctors out at Healthgrades.com. I have found this site to be accurate most of the time. There are patient reviews and such.
Just be sure to do your homework. Otherwise you could waste your time and money.

The dr who diagnosed me in 1993 (I hadn't even heard of Fibro) is an internist/allergist. He's a really good diagnostician, and now he's my GP.
I feel very comfortable having him handling the "internal" side of things - from time to time I'll try other things on my own (I've tried accupuncture, chiropractic, PT.) He wrote a prescript
ion for me to use a warm-water therapy pool, and encourages me to be as active as possible.
One of the biggest things I like about
him is that he's very
open-minded. If he doesn't know something, he'll suggest someone who might, or he'll look up something while I'm there. Doesn't have to appear to be all-knowing.
I did go to a rheumatologist once in the beginning, and she confirmed his diagnosis and said she doubted she could do any more for me than he could....so in my opinion, it all depends on the drs and the circumstances.

Just make sure whatever doc you pick believes and treats fibromyalgia.
I hope you find a doc you like...
