All,

I read all over the medical sites that ascites carries a two year mortality of 50%.  On here I read the other day that ascites is "not a good sign".

But what does this mean? 

Is the mortality rate so high because 50% of people with ascites carry on drinking and 50% do not?  (only considering drinkers here really - as I dont know how other causes of cirrhosis progress).  Without a tipps - it seems that there are no examples of people who have ascites ever regaining liver function - once it starts - things only seem to get worse.  Is this correct?

Mine is creeping back again now - ive gone up 6lbs this last week, I admit ive been eating more salt - infact I went back to my old ways with the salt pot.  I like salt.  I think I got over confident that I was fine.

Go to the doctor. Have labs. Get a professional opinion. Get on some meds. Know exactly what you are dealing with.  Stop wasting time.  Call today.  Go today.

My doctor would not even consider aswering that question. She is far superior than mere patients to bother answering questions - and additionally - far too busy to actually talk.

You worry too much. Cut down on the salt and keep self diagnosing yourself. It's obvious you know your body better than a doctor. I would be careful to avoid hangnails, they can wreak havoc on your health. Cheerio!

Then get another doctor.  Meanwhile, cut the salt as that's the likely culprit.

Hep - I think it is the likely thing. Id been doing well at less than 5gm/d for quite some time. Lost control a bit this week and treated myself. Back to white meat, broccoli, carrots, peas, green beans this week - and no salt - ive found a veggie soup with practially no salt in it - this is great for dinner times.
I cant manage to reduce the ascites with this regime - only keep it at bay it seems - so im pretty sure at some point soon I will be forced to go to the docs.

Mr E ....I think reading maybe bad for your health. Lol. Now go to a liver specialist....and get those hangnails checked....

Rick, I see you are at it again.... did you take your lactulose today? I am finding it difficult to laugh today but I did to the point of tears ( not sure if the tears were from pain or humor) You see without doing an internet search or self diagnosis I have been officially told I have Bursitis, tendonitis and a torn rotor cuff..... I unlike some went to the Dr and said "my shoulder hurts like a you know what" the Dr said lets do an MRI and oh my gosh I have a diagnosis..... imagine that! But I could have saved a co-pay and just asked you guys what was wrong!!!! I am so glad the spiders have not invaded my brain....yet!

Sue, sorry to hear that.  I know you are experiencing some pretty significant pain.  Have you scheduled a rotator cuff repair yet?

Connie, I see my ortho on tuesday, he has been golfing somewhere warm the last 2 weeks... lol! I am not sure what I am doing for this yet. I did want it amputated last week when I missed work and spent 3 days in tears. Pain meds make me ill so I just do 800 motrin.... At one point I was reconsidering something stronger but I opted out......  My ortho is semi retired and is no longer doing shoulders, he did my right one 5yrs ago, I am having a difficult time thinking about going to a different one, but he said he would assist. So we will see. I am moving the end of Feb so it will have to be a ways down the road. I am just so glad I dont have spiders in my brain......wheeew

So you still haven't seen a doctor?  As Connie suggested, get another one if you don't like the last one you saw.

Sue, did they at minimum, consider injecting your shoulder?  I just had my ankle shot up and majority of my foot pain went away.  Just have irritated sesamoid bones so I'm wearing my rocker sneakers to help it out.  Funny how the doctor helped me sort that problem out... huh...the wonders of modern medicine idea

Sue-I have had the shots in the shoulders too. Makes me feel soooo much better. But, my pain is from frozen shoulders, not a tear. I hope you are feeling better soon!

To All, I have had the cortizone injections...... am only allowed one more in the joint. But I can still get injections for the Bursa issue so I may try that to calm the bursa down. The new Dr my ortho is referring me to is really good, per my daughter who is an anethesia tech at local hospital. My problem is all about a comfort zone, I have issues with anxiety and getting used to new Dr and them getting used to me and my quirks is tough. I do understand my ortho telling me he doesnt do shoulders anymore because of his age and it is more  intricate work than other types of joint and bone surgery. He did such an awesome job on my right shoulder and wrist that those joints are 100%, my right had 3 major tears!! I cannot do anything till after I move and get some more paid time on the books to cover the 2 weeks before my private disability kicks in. Let me tell you that 6 bucks a week has been worth the investment. Of course if I tried to get that insurance now I would be declined believe it or not because I have since been on meds for OCD and depression.

I am working on getting this taken care of by a Dr..... and not as some by self diagnosis, the internet(which is a wonderful tool when used right lol).... although I was thinking of trying a low sodium diet.....lol oh wait I dont have ascities! I dont have wooly spiders either Rick, but maybe I did injure myself when I hoisted my freind on to the stage nono to meet Willie down there in Alabama, hhhmmmmm so maybe being a Willie groupie is the cause of all this... BWA hahahaha!!! yeah

It is funny - I am actually laughing.

Ascites isnt hard to diagnose though when youre a 11 stone bloke who looks 8 months pregnant and currently weighs 12.5 stone.

Sue, thanks for all the background info.  I do understand the difficulty in getting to know a new doctor and him you.  That's really the only reason I remain in Jax--my Mayo hepatologist and ortho doc, who are the elite of those depts.  Hope you can at least get the bursa injection.
