Using cast iron cookware

Question for everyone-

Is it bad for liver disease to use cast iron cookware?  I read it somewhere (but can't recall where) that using iron cookware is bad---since iron is bad for a compromised liver---because iron leaks out into food during cooking.

As always, thank you everyone for sharing information and experience.

Things are going well with hubby.  Today is day 122 alcohol free.  Four months ago tonight hubby had his last drink.

Emma, it's best not to use it.  If his liver enzymes ever normalize or get close to normal, perhaps you can use it once in awhile--though not as a daily thing.

Thanks Connie! Yes, congrats to ML's hubby too. We are collecting the alcohol free days. :)

Should I stop using the enamel covered cast iron too?

No, enamel clad is okay if it's fully covered.

One good rule is..... if you breath it, eat it, inhale it or absorb it.... your liver has to filter it.

Trying to learn all this liver stuff. On the cookware...who knew??!! I feel like the more I read, the more I find out.

What's the best type of cookware to use?

I was reading more last night and I found on Wikipedia that enameled cast iron may "limit" the leaching of iron. I think this means my fancy enameled cookware in addition to the cast iron skillet needs to go in the box for 19 year old son.

Stainless steel would be your best bet.

The transplant center helped me to understand that rule. I also learned to not over sanatize things also. The more germ free we make our environment the less resistant we become to germs. Food prep areas , bathtroom.....
