I am getting ready to release my "how to" manual for facing ALD.

But first I feel compelled to add a liability disclaimer at the very end of my short story.

Anyone have a suggestion?

We have not seen you for some time. Writing is surely a cathartic way to process some of the grief when losing a spouse.

I don't know if your how to manual is something for your own personal blog or journal perhaps? Or do you plan to market it something as a self published book? Can you share that info with me? Big Hugs

My thoughts after hanging around with lawyers for twenty years+ is that if you write the disclaimer yourself, to the best of your ability, that will probably suffice.

If you want something official, get a lawyer to write it, or copy some legalese from another source.

Disclaimer - who the hell am I? On the advice of counsel, I am advised to tell you that I could well be full of crap.

Having said that, If you are writing as an expert, and people might follow your medical advice, and you have assets, I'd have a lawyer write it.

If you are poor as a church mouse, and you don't present yourself as an expert - what is anyone going to sue you for? Your clothes and your ten year old car?

FWIW, YMMV, etc.

Not so much of advice to a disclaimer but a beware. Be prepared to get more negative feedback than positive if you are speaking from the heart and truthful. ALD is a tough subject matter for those effected. Not so much the patient as much as it is the caregiver. Most (Not all) only want sugar coating and a crutch to support themselves while being a crutch to their loved one. I wish you the best at your endeavor and hope you can save (and surely you will) many souls but it will cost you to speak forwardly. Just the cost of caring can suck you dry.

One of the things that used to get me was how hospice nurses dealt with the baggage of looking at death and likely on undesirable terms almost daily. My only conclusion is that there has to be a disconnect less they go insane or deep depression. I respect their ability to put on a a good face with such horrors daily. Just ain't for me. I'm pretty blunt and it has gotten me in trouble in this forum a few times. If you can't put on the face of sympathy for the devil you'll get beaten down pretty quick. Don't take this a peeing on your parade but do be aware that the "One" life you save is gonna cost you ten people wanting to strangle you. Been here done that and wouldn't attempt to write a book on it...... unless I wanted to live the life of Salmon Rushdie (sp) or whatever his name is.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and experience. I could give a bleep about the trivial responses that only serve to bolster someone else when there is another's life to be saved.

If I were looking for fame or money, perhaps I would look at this differently. Perhaps there is something that has been written and would have saved me from having to battle to stay "ahead of the curve". Others should be able to learn from our experiences. As we do here on healingwell.com.

You do not get "do overs" when it comes to saving one afflicted with ALD. You have one shot to get it right. Learning "on the job" will not get it done. False hope pinned on the afflicted or medical institutions is a crap shoot. I am hoping to share a story that might reveal most of the pitfalls one can be on notice for.

And, unfortunately no matter how armed you are, there are lives that simply cannot be saved.

I like stew as much as the next person. Pork stew, yes. Salmon stew, no.

But no pig can live in a stile, whether the King of the Stews says so or not.
