Peter....if you read back through the treatment threads over the past year, you will see that most using Sovaldi with Riba or Sovaldi with Olysio are clearning and virus and achieving SVR at 12 weeks post treatment.
BUT, a small %age of folks, per the statistics posted all over the place, are relapsing. Most of those patients are ::) now on a treatment called Harvoni. It is a combo of Sovaldi and another antiviral that has even better statistics for achieving long term SVR.
My Partner, Mike, took Sovaldi and Olysio for 3 months and DID clear the virus. He is now 6 months post treatment and is still UNDETECTED. However, he too had a failed treatment along the way. In 2003 he did Interferon and Riba and that was both difficult AND unsuccessful. His viral load went from just over 3million copies before treatment to over 7 million AFTER treatment. And he was very very ill and determined to be botha non responder and ineligible for those same drugs down the line.
He was transplanted in 2011 and waited for a treatment that was Interferon and Riba free. Unfortunately, his nice new liver has Stage 3 fibrosis (no cirrhosis) and his MELD score is 12. So he is clear, but not totally CURED of his ailments.
Hopefully with you.dads genotype and state of disease he will qualify for another treatment soon....maybe the Harvoni is for you. I have also heard that the protocol for treatment is increasing the number of weeks....to prevent relapse. I also understand those with very high viral loads who do not clear in 4 weeks are those must suspect for relapse.
I am sorry he has fallen into this category BUT we live in the era where there are varieous treatments either already available OR soon to be available and are sure to be cured soon.
