small bowel obstruction questions

I have a colostomy. I recently had surgery on my foot and following that, I developed an ileus (gut stopped working) and that lead to a small bowel obstruction.

My question is whether having one obstruction puts me at any increased risk for another obstruction? And also, because of the obstruction, do I need to be more cautious about what I eat?

Hello Sunny, glad to read that your foot surgery is over. I will tell you my story about ileus after a surgery. This very thing happened to me after a surgery over 30 yrs ago. It was explained to me it happened because of the pain medication I was given at the time. Basically things would not wake up. They put in an NG tube, which was not much fun among giving me laxatives, tons of fun. However, they did get things going again.

I have had many surgeries since then, never had a problem nor did I change my diet. What instructions were you given by the dr?

I had a small bowel obstruction and surgery in 2008. My surgeon told me there was a 7% chance of having another one. So far I have not, but I sure watch myself and I always live in fear of it happening again.
